Honestly, the Devils with a goalie should be a very good team.

If Fitz fumbles this, doesn't fix his goaltending and they flop this coming year, he is as good as gone.
Having dealt with one of the owners, I know how involved he is and demanding he is in his sports endeavors (to the detriment of what we needed him for!).

How can this be? I was under the impression from the resident genius New Jersey fans that Allen WAS the fix… hmmm… strange…

The Senators are trying to move goalie Joonas Korpisalo and his $4 million salary cap hit and that is not a point of interest for Calgary.

If the Flames and Devils complete a swap, a goaltender is not expected to be heading to the Flames in a move. According to Pagnotta, Devils forward Alexander Holtz was part of the return during the season. It is unclear, at this point, if he could be in a deal now.
The Devils are also looking to add a scoring winger to their lineup and some teams have been calling Calgary about forward Andrew Mangiapane, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Holtz

Palat
Frees up longer term cap for NJ, with a good chance to sign Mangiapane to a reduced contract going forward. Really adds on yr at $6MM for the Flames since the Markstrom and Palat contract balance.

Korpisalo has two good seasons in his last nine.
It’s like if the Sens gave Vladar $20M.
Woof.

Would adding 50% Markstrom retained be enough to change holtz and palat to mercer? Which is better, mercer or holtz and palat?

Two things, not sure Ownership would do retention on 2 players prior to start of the season being you are only allowed 3 retention spots and the Flames have a number of UFAs again this year where retention would maximize value at the deadline (ie. Kuzmenko, Sharangovich (if can't be signed))
I think the Flames would be pretty happy to get Holtz and 10 with only retaining on 1 year of Mangiapane. Moving Palat for them is big since they have some big signings in the next couple seasons where that money could cause problems (Hughes, Nemec, Mercer). I just suspect that Palat may not waive his NMC to come to the Flames.

We really going to use Pagnotta again when he's been discredited time and time again.

Definitely Mercer. It would take a 1st and a 2nd minimum for the Devils to move that Palat contract so getting Mangiapane at half price and Markstrom and being able to get rid of him is a hell of a deal for the Devils. The Flyers had to retain 3.57 million a year for 3 years to get rid of Kevin Hayes for almost nothing and he was coming off a 54 point season. The Devils should almost trade the 10th with Palat just to get rid of the Palat contract.

Agreed but I wasn’t subtracting that.
I was genuinely curious whether 50% Markstrom added ($3million x 2 years) to the original proposal would get mercer and the first.
My second question was whether mercer or holtz+palat was better. For my over expectations hope chest.
Edit: thanks! People answered before I could post my clarification.

Just an overpaid depth player. This is how you weaponize space to get assets while rebuilding. Palat is a pro that comes from a winning culture in TB, probably a good asset to have around for young player development for the Flames.

Might as well trade Rasmus for Broberg and Jack Campbell if we are going to weaponize space like that. Palat is a negative asset, if the Devils wanted to get rid of him just by himself they would probably have to do a Hayes type deal and eat 3 million a year and get a 6th round pick back. Not even sure a team would be willing to do that as Hayes was probably better at the time he was traded.

I will believe the report by Royle9 that Markstrom is a Devil. I will guess its 50% retention and we are getting pick 10 back.

I don't think that we would need that return for it to be a success.
