Flames need TWO points. Loser point on Thursday is not enough.

No.
LA can get 4 points still. They need to get 3 more than us.
A loser point means a regulation loss for us against WPG coupled with an LA win against SJ still gets them in. We need two points. Or a combination of 2 points gained/2 LA points lost.

Flames need a combination of two points gained or two points lost by the Kings.
A single point on Thursday doesn't clinch. Need to gain two points or have LA lose two points.

Yeah, this is why I wasn't too invested in their game... If we won or lost tonight, and if they won or lost tonight, it basically leads to the same outcome that Thursday is a must-win.

I have no love for the Oilers, but I hope this puts paid to the ridiculous notion that was asserted here earlier that the Oilers (or any team) would not compete in order to dent the Flames playoff chances.

This brings another interesting scenario. If it's a tie game near the end of regulation with The Kings on Thursday, you will likely see a pulled goalie. If we get a loser point against them Thursday, that gets us the lock.
edit: And that would be quite fitting as LA has abused the loser point this season.
|
How so? If we lost against Wpg and LA wins their last game they'd be at 97 and us at 96.
Edit: late to the party...now back to the celebrations

Loser point against them still doesn't get them a lock. Flames would finish game with 96, Kings with 95 after the game and a chance to claim 97.
These are all the scenarios now given the Flames opponents and standings:
4, 3, or 2 points for the Flames sends them to the playoffs no matter what.
1 point and the Flames miss the playoffs if the Kings win against the Sharks.
0 point and the Flames miss the playoffs if the Kings get at least a point against the Sharks.

It is not.
Flames can lose in reg and still clinch on Saturday.

Not at all. Completely different outcome. Flames only need to win 1 of the remaining 2 games to clinch. Clinching by winning on Thursday would be ideal though.
