Not sure about safety, but I'm guessing you're right. I read one of the big issues with the old school masks was vision -- specifically, not being able to look downwards and see the puck at your feet (which lead to the helmet/cage combo and eventually the current mask that is used today). I'm sure comfort is also a factor.

Of course, love the photo though. Incidently, last year I helped coach a minor hockey team with Ron Sutter. Ron was telling us a story, because he sat beside Hextall where Hextall would place his equipment on the floor all laid out. Then Hextall would basically rock back and forth and just get himself all worked up. The fella's would wind him up even more by moving his blocker or glove. One of the funniest stories listenning to Sutter tell it.
