My email servers don't support push, so it is a non-issue for me, but I am always curious about how certain actions can impact the battery.
|
Yup, using push. I was in Europe with data roaming turned off, and because of that it was just hammering my battery. Pretty dumb it's not smart enough to realize it should give up as there is no data connection.

If you're traveling and have data roaming off or are out of cell service you still need to buy GPS that comes with local maps.

Not Sure if this is the right place, but i am thinking about buying a used iphone, and was wondering about unlocking, or jail breaking used phones? I have a contract with Bell at the moment, but alot of the used phones seem to be on other networks.
Suggestions on what to look for / avoid?
thanks

If you want the ability to update without hassle, avoid a jailbroken+unlocked phone. They will only give you problems with updates and what not. Look for either factory unlocked or a locked Bell phone. Avoid a "gevey sim" unlock.

Since it's an app, I would assume google would do it for the IPhone as well, despite android being run by google, any word on something like this coming down the pipe for Iphone?

iPhone's problem here is that google doesn't need to port that feature over to iPhone and can keep it as a selling point for android devices. A couple of years ago Apple bought a map company and I can see them ditching Google maps in iOS6. That way they could do their own turn by turn navigation and not be reliant on their main competitor.

Well after a great day yesterday I am all ready down to 80 percent. I didn't stream music this morning all settings are the same but did make 1 2 min phone call. I am pretty confident it is group messaging in Imessage that is killing the battery so much. I have an appointment at the genius bar for 4 30 so I will find out more then.

Apple makes and maintains the functionality of the current Maps application in iOS. It simply uses Google data. Part of the licensing of the data is that it is not to be used for turn by turn navigation or would at least be cost prohibitive to do so for Apple even if they could.
In order for Apple to do it, they would need much more than maps. They would need all kinds of place and location data along with route finding capabilities, traffic, transit, walking information, imagery, etc to be at least on par with the current app's functionality. From recent purchases, you can put it together that Apple is definitely working on punting Google as their data supplier.

Well I got a new phone off warranty. He didn't say there were any battery issues but it did have some network problems that may have been causing the phone to loop. Regardless the wife is happy she gets this phone which is brand new and I will be getting her 4s win win

Anyone know how to check if I have apps running in the background? My data is diminishing at a very fast rate and I'm barely using my Internet when I'm not on wifi.

Double click the home button on the bottom and they pop up, but I can't see that being a huge issue... did you end up actually streaming hockey games? That could do it.

Could it also be location services being on?

ALL ABOARD!

Location services don't chew up that much data. Nothing that would be extremely noticable.

I have no doubt Apple is well aware of the battery leak issue but sending a random file to someone who posted online? BS. Apple has access to probably hundreds if not thousands of staff phones who they could test stuff out on.

It should be no problem at all.
Also, I can't be the only one totally bored with the now outdated endless pages o apps and icons on iOS devices. The folders are ugly looking and the other solution of just pages and pages of app icons is silly. For a company that prides itself on looks you figure something new and fresh should be coming down the pipe.
Loving the split keyboard for the iPad though.

Yes and no.
On Android in Google Maps, you can have Google Maps pre-cache maps of areas that you'll know you'll be in. So, it saves the map areas you want to the phone, and still uses the GPS, but no need to have data or even a cell signal on for it to work.
Used this feature on a trip to California recently, works well. Precached about 100 sq miles of maps before leaving on the trip. Turned off data for the majority of the day, and we used it a fair bit to get around as far as knowing which direction to head, where interstates interesected etc.
You don't get full voice navigation (I don't think), or, do you get to search points of interest, get down to StreetView (pictures) without data on, but you get your real time gps location, on a google map, which is still zoomable in and out, without using data.

Thanks for all the replies, regarding the Android current status, if you wanted voice direction, with data off, I am guessing when it comes to buying GPS with maps, there is no app that would be able to do that, it would be to huge? You need the in-car stuff still?
