Draisaitl and McDavid are best friends. There's no chance he doesn't sign again. Hopefully this time for market value though. It'll be hard for then to sign anyone else

They may be best friends, but he has to see that the Oilers are a mess and there is nothing coming in the next few years. Having the opportunity to jump before the ship sinks may be something he may entertain. Especially when the team that is calling is his boyhood favorite team the Leafs. Even if he only plays a couple years with Matthews, it isn't a talent drop from Draisaitl.
You know his agency will be whispering in his ear as 22M come off the books for the Leafs next year and the Leafs position themselves to be there if he goes to the market.

Pretty sure that's the price of one Bobby Nich burger after taxes.

I was thinking about this with the $53 cap shenanigans. Kane is going on LTIR for 5-6 months. The oldest roster in the nhl will have injuries meaning that LTIR will get maximum use in greaserville.
Here’s the thing though; injuries provide opportunities for other players, usually younger players from the farm. Except there are no younger players now and astonishingly the oilers never even tried to get players off of waivers.
When I think of e=ng, it’s this stuff!

Yeah, it's not happening.

I keep thinking this...
The Oilers last season got the 'Yellow Brick Road' all the way to the Finals. They got every lucky break in the book and a few new ones.
And they got worse defensively, got older, and their goaltending, which was suspect but got hot, is unlikely to hold.
Not to mention, you can only ride Horses hard all day and put them away wet for so long. Eventually they'll tire.
People keep talking about 'windows to win?' They had it.
I think McDavid's whiny tantrum is because he probably knows it.
That was their shot. They shot it.
"But aside from that Mrs. Lincoln...how was the play?"

The Vancouver series sums this up beautifully.
They were so close to losing to a third or fourth string goalie
McDavid slices Hughes right in front of a referee and gets away with it, then scores an important game tying goal.
A play that resulted in a Canuck suspension and a fine included a two hander and a cross check to the face that went completely unpunished.

And further, I know people will clamour that they were 1 game away from winning it all.
But thats more on Florida than anything else.
Florida weren't taking it seriously until #### got real.
The Oilers we're giving 100% while the Tigers were essentially coasting. Hence why McDavid got his trophy...because he was trying to drag his team into an out-matched fight.

Did you watch game 7 in 2004 vs Tampa? The 2024 game 7 took place in that world.

have to chuckle at Lavoie back on waivers with Vegas choosing CP's 27th ranked Calgary prospect ahead of him.
Lavoie was #7 on their list in September
Dobber had this for April '24
1 Dylan Holloway
2 Xavier Bourgault
3 Philip Broberg
4 Raphael Lavoie
5 Beau Akey

Four of those 5 gone now (unless they reclaim Lavoie).

So if they keep Kane "injured" all season, they can trade for a 5M cap hit player and bury his cap hit and bring him back in playoffs? In theory

TSN headline video title “Edmonton motivated to win the cup now”
Seriously, now they are motivated? And 31 teams are not motivated to win the cup? Such a stupid title and fluff article.

I get the Oiler media live, sort of. Blah, blah, blah
But at least one panel guy should have played Devils advocate. Talked about how old they are, how there is no guarantee they can add quality D, that an injury to one of two players and they miss playoffs. That everything went their way last year, etc.
But not one

Draft Pick
|
Who cares if they have cap relief from LTIR either… not like they have any assets to trade for quality players. They would have to deplete the cupboards even further and sacrifice draft capital which they don’t have much of. An injury doesn’t give them an opportunity to try some cap magic like Vegas or Tampa pulled, it just means they get significantly worse for an extended period of time. But hey, they would be younger!

Yeah, they are LTIRing a guy that probably isn't worth his contract at this point. It isn't like they have a player like Stone or Kucherov waiting in the wings. They get Kane back, which may or may not move the needle.

Not exactly. Lavoie and Schwindt are both right-shooting centres—the rarest of birds in the NHL. Pelletier is a winger.

The Canucks not having Boeser for game 7 hurt them a lot as well, especially in a 1-goal game.
Oilers definitely caught a break there.
