Oh man, I hadn't looked at their cap situation in a while. I love this... - Dead Cap: $3,016,667
- Goalies: $3,600,000
That doesn't seem ideal.

Of course all but 1 of the talking heads on the TSN season preview pick the Oilers to win the Stanley Cup this year. Wankers!! No team has ever won more Stanley Cups than the Oilers have in September and early October.

Looking at that lineup how can anyone possibly pick them as the Cup favorite. Outside of Mavi and Raisaitl, that is a horribly thin roster from top to bottom.
Their defense group is significantly worse than last year. Considering that was the main area of concern and poor performance for the team, feels like a massive step back and an already often shaky Skinner will be under further siege.
With a key injury or two, it isn’t hard to see the Oilers missing the playoff dance altogether. Old team, poor depth, poor defence and suspect goaltending, not exactly a recipe to be proclaiming them Cup favorites.

Not to be pedantic, but unless I've got a weird version of the CapWages website, I'm looking at the Oilers page right now and they're listing them as having 1,170,833 in cap space with the same 14 forwards you mentioned (though that includes Kane, so really 13).
Regardless, if they decide they want more than 6 d-men or want an extra forward, that space is all but gone

And they traded their first (top 12 protected, lol), so they're already all-in!

They will further gut their future prospect pool by trading the picks they got for Broberg and Holloway, along with their 2026 1st. Nothing else of any value left to trade away.
And they will need to address shortcomings on D and forward depth.

That's fine. It just makes their inevitable failure that much funnier. Watching the SN panel cry whenever the Oilers get spanked has become one of my favourite pastimes.

If the Oilers were to somehow win the 2025 Stanley Cup, they would become the oldest team in history to do so. They're a very old team, coming off of a short summer, and with a key offensive player already on IR.
Yeah, it's not happening.

Yeah the talking heads are thinking that McDavid is going to will his team. At some point you have to be realistic, this isn't basketball, it is still very much a team sport. The Oilers essentially have to try and beat teams in the 25mins he is on the ice. That is always the plan. There is a reason they are 3-19-2 when he doesn't get a point.
Past teams I think had players that were able to tread water a bit better, and that was before they revamped Defense for some questions marks. It could go pretty badily. I figure in the first 10 games we start seeing articles throwing Skinner (goalie) under the bus because the team in front of him doesn't know what they are doing.

McLeod for Savoie felt like management was keen to fix our age issue

LOL
McLeod was the youngest 'contributing' forward on their roster last year. But yeah, moving him for Savoie was the ticket to getting younger.
Oldest team in the league, and this is what they did with their 3 youngest forwards and youngest D:
McLeod - traded for a guy that didn't make the team
Holloway - let walk
Lavoie - lost on waivers
Broberg - let walk

The Oilers going all in and not giving a #### about next year can't help McDavid want to stay.

The Oilers have $53 in cap space. Enough for two Bobby Nick burgers.

If they bank it for the whole year they can add some cokes and an OilersMinus subscription at the deadline.

Wouldn't they have been better off keeping Savoie and other plug off the roster and try accruing on the 1M+ they had before calling them up and getting to $53? I get they are maximizing LTIR space, but with him coming back in a few months and them not needing it right now..why? I assume they still want to sign McDermont, since they only have 6 Dmen on the roster.
