Buffalo has so many young forwards that I’d love to see in red. Holy moly that would be sweet.

Back to the drawing board cause the offer was junk? I feel like Hanifin and Backlund trades could result in a more balanced roster

Ooof let's reset our expectations a bit.
I don't see either of those guys being included. Certainly not Edvinsson. He's a young core piece with #1 dman upside.

The interesting thing about Detroit, is that they are having trouble signing Joe Velano, because there is not an obvious spot for him on their roster with Larkin, Compher and Copp as the top three centres. It has pushed Rasmussen down to the fourth line, which isn't ideal. Rasmussen has shown to be an effective middle six centre, but Velano hasn't impressed and looks like a bottom six centre. I would think one of them goes to Calgary in any trade, and given Calgary's need for size, I'd push for Rasmussen.
Plus Plus.

Hopefully Conroy can he get a good deal done.
Berggren, a 1st, and a good prospect (Sandin-Pelikka or Edvinsson) would be a nice haul.

They’re not trading either of those D prospects you mentioned.

I wonder which team is having the snag with the extension? My guess would be Buffalo. They have a lot of high quality prospects and to include one of them would be risky if Hanifin is not extended.
That statement about the extension could mean a few things though:
1. It could mean that particular team is only willing to pay Calgary’s asking price if an extension is in place.
2. It could mean Hanifin is willing to sign an extension with one team but not the other. And both teams are only willing to pay the price if Hanifin is willing to sign an extension.
3. It could mean Hanifin’s contract demands for an extension are more than the acquiring team wants to sign him to.

Of course who knows but I think coming off an entry level deal if he was offered 3.5 over 6 that's pretty enticing for a player like that. I feel like you maybe could have even got him cheaper at that time . He got 1 year basically league minimum then 2 years at 2.4. So I don't think he would have been overly unreasonable on a long term deal.

Mangiapane's contract takes him to 29. I don't think the Flames offer him another deal. Or at least I wouldn't.

Hopefully Hanifin is willing to talk extension to help us get some better value. Buffalo and Detroit are both teams on the rise but not sure either would be top of his list to sign long term with.

Oh I agree, that's why I said spectacular.
If we got either of those guys alone for Hanifin, that would be great.

I was talking about coming out of his entry deal or even after he signed the one year deal. I like Mangipane but his value isn't great anymore for what he brings. See what happens this year. Maybe he will bounce back. But even then if you're paying him above 6 I'm not really a fan.

Realistically from Detroit you'd get:
25 first with protection
Prospect like Mazur or Lombardi
Olli Maatta
Don't think there's any chance that you'd get any of their top shelf prospects.

Hanifin strikes me as a guy who wants to get back to the east coast a lot of his friends and family are in that area.

In what world would he have signed a long term deal after his ELC or his 1 year deal ended? After ELC he had 2 very partial NHL seasons. 54 total games, 13 total points. Of course he got a one year deal then. His one year contract he had 32 points. Decent, and promising, but not world beating. So they signed a show me for two years. And he performed, leading to a negotiation in 2022 where his comparable in numbers was Kempe, who got about the same money.

2023/2024 Trade Rumors and Speculation thread
If it was Buffalo and Hanifin was signed to an extension, could the flames get something like this:
2025 1st round pick (lottery protected)
Noah Ostlund (16th overall in 2022)
Isak Rosen (14th overall in 2021)
While that may seem like a lot… the two prospects are arguably not even in the top 5 of their current prospect pool.

I would prefer one of their blue chips for an extended Hanafin.
Kulich or Savoie - one for one
They have the depth to accommodate this, although they would pinch their noses.

I would as well but I assume they covet those players too much to trade them.

Doubt they would move Savoie after drafting Benson. I imagine they look at that pair as a future top 6 pair to put with a guy like Tage or Cozens
