Because their customers are happy with their coverage? I would certainly not want them to switch. I love their coverage, sadly don't travel overseas, and very rarely feel any need to talk and use data at the same time over 3G. They're not going to build a new network from scratch just to lure the iPhone, especially with the success of Android.
The whole debate is practically over anyway, because 4G looks like its going to be focused on LTE across the board, although WiMax is kind of the CDMA of that battle. As far as I know, both AT&T and Verizon are looking at LTE for their 4G networks.
Verizon said they'll be starting to deploy LTE networks by the end of this year, so it won't be an issue much longer.
Haha, now all the nimrods are bitching about how 4.01 has made their signal WEAKER!!1oneoneone11!!1!
It didn't make it weaker. AT&T's s****y signal has always been that weak. It's just that now the phone is finally showing the proper strength, instead of covering it up for the last 3 years.
The single most important thing Apple should do is boot AT&T out on its ass. The amount of BS that gets spewn all over the rest of the planet because of their crappy network is ######-tacular.

The vast majority of people who are iphone users (or who use any tech) aren't hardcore about it. When they see a signal that has for the past how many years been full, suddenly not be full after an update they are going to be upset and confused.

I guess if you're American you have no reason to leave the States.

Totally. I've shown like three people I know with 3Gs how to open Fast App Switching.

The weak signal in congested areas has been a long-documented problem with AT&T. This is not a new revelation.
...and I clearly was not talking about the death grip stuff in my post. Even though every knob with 1/8 of a brain cell is going to try to treat me like I was. (not directed at you)
Bottom line, Apple's phone is dropping calls. There are no reported problems with other similar phones on AT&T's network.
Apple's problem.
Also, nobody held a gun to Apple's head to go exclusively with AT&T. They should have done their due dilligence and evaluated their network capacity before going exclusive.

Its not that I'm American, its that I'm poor. That's why I said "I sadly don't travel overseas." I'd love to say I visit GSM-only areas frequently, but its not reality. I listen to Leo Laporte talk about how he needs a GSM phone for travel, and I wish I had that kind of money. As it is, being able to use my phone on a theoretical future trip to Europe doesn't qualify for my phone must-have list.
But, as people have been pointing out, in 2 years everyone will be on LTE and we'll all get along!

Apple's problem.
at&t leads the industry in dropped calls, it's not just the iPhone, everyone on at&t has similar issues depending on the area.
EDIT: Here I do mean normal dropped calls, not dropped calls due to attenuation of the signal by the hardware design problem when holding the phone a specific way. There are two separate issues.
That's why people want the iPhone on Verizon, so they don't have to be on at&t's crappy network.
And that's why you don't have the same problem with iPhones in other places.

They should have, though really did they have much choice? Unless they introduced a CDMA phone they were kind of stuck with at&t for a national carrier.
