As it kicks Conan O'Brien to the curb with a $32 million golden parachute, NBC is reportedly seeking to maintain control of material developed over the years by the late night host and his writers. This intellectual property, as it were, would apparently include bits like "In the Year 3000" and characters such as "Pimpbot 5000." But while the "Masturbating Bear" may be headed for permanent hibernation, fans will be happy to know that the risque character's theme music (and that of the Pimpbot) is beyond NBC's grasp, thanks to the foresight of drummer Max Weinberg and guitarist Jimmy Vivino. The musicians copyrighted those compositions in 2004, according to the below United States Copyright Office records. Weinberg and Vivino registered "Masturbating bear music" and "Masturbating bear theme," as well as themes for both Pimpbot 5000 and Pimpbot 2000. Sadly, it is unclear whether these stirring instrumentals will ever again be performed.
Or Leno saying it'd be selfish for him to walk away because his staff would be put out of a job. But he could care less about Conan's staff that uprooted their lives to move to LA and their jobs. Take a settlement like Conan did.
Leno came across as a complete narcissistic moron in that interview. He just doesn't get it, everything he whined about is what he did to Conan.
On another note - anyone see Jimmy Fallon last night? Great show with Ringo Starr, that's what Late Night is all about. Just pure entertainment beginning to end.
Conan was done anyways, forget Leno. The show was in shambles with Conan, first time in 60 years it was losing money.

Doesn't Triumph belong to it's creator as well? Sort of like Ed the Sock?
I was fine with Masturbating Bear being put in carbonite and his song is just a derivative of common music anyway...but I will miss In Year 2000/3000.
There's got to be a way to resurrect that. Maybe "In the near fuuuturee, in the near fuuuuturrrrree"
I guess that puts the final nail in the coffin of the unlikely chance they'd ever do their "staring contest" bit again. Man that was gold back in the day.
Conan O'Brien is shelling out his own cash to some ex-staffers who didn't get jack from that $7.5 million separation deal from NBC.
According to sources close to production, Conan's stagehands from "The Tonight Show" were not covered by the NBC severance plan. But we're told Conan is stepping up -- promising to pay his nearly 50 person crew at least six weeks severance out of his own pocket.
I can't believe how bad Jay's show actually is. From the cheesy fake handshake routine at the start, to headlines, to the terribly awkward interviews...it just flat out sucks. No surprise it got cancelled. People don't realize what they were missing in The Tonight Show with Conan.

Super Bowl viewers were rubbing their eyes at the sight of a TV spot pairing CBS late-night host David Letterman with longtime NBC archrival Jay Leno, plus media magnate Oprah Winfrey.

He might take his show on a live stage tour until he can return to TV in September. Speculation is he has talked to Fox, and might create a joint venture with them for January 2011.
Who is the heir apparant to Leno now? Jimmy Fallon? I think Seth Myers from SNL might get consideration. Dennis Miller (did he lose hipster-cred by going right wing?)? Bill Maher?

What makes Bill Maher so good is the substance of conversation - surely something that would be dumbed and watered down if he were to go to network TV, so he's out. I personally hope it's an unknown. Late night has only had one new personality enter the scene in the past what? 15 years?

Thats because its a risk to put in someone that no one knows about. Network TV doesnt take any risks anymore, that's why most new TV sucks.
I would say that for the most part, networks do choose relatively unknowns to host. Not totally unknowns but not huge stars either.
Late Night - Conan O'Brien 1993-2009 - Writer for SNL, Simpsons
Daily Show - Craig Killborn 1996-1998 - Came from ESPN
Late Late Show - Craig Killborn 1999-2004 - ^^
Late Late Show - Craig Ferguson 2005-... - Some successes in the UK, Played Mr Wick on Drew Carey Show.
Daily Show - Jon Stewart 1999-... - Guest hosted for Tom Snyder and filled in for Killborn after Comedy Central booted him. Almost got the Late Night instead of Conan and was rumored to be offered the Late Show if Letterman left for ABC in 2002.
Colbert Report - Stephen Colbert - Dana Carvey Show, Daily Show Correspondent.
Late Night - Jimmy Fallon 2009-... SNL cast member. He went straight from the Groundlings to SNL.
Jay Leno is the most famous person to get a late night show followed by Jon Stewart and Fallon.
With the exception of Killborn and Fallon, they are all stand ups or sketch comedians that have had some minor successes but could be considered 'unknowns' to most.
