I don't.
In general I don't even like the "core" discussion because it's so ridiculously subjective. The core is Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett and Tkachuk (unproven so far) Giordano, Brodie and Hamilton. That's it. I should throw Tkachuk out of there because he hasn't even made the team.
As much as I love the other guys as players, they are interchangeable. Backlund is eventually going to cost too much money. Do you trade Bennett to keep Backlund? Of course not. You hope Jankowski is ready or you replace him with something else.
The big thing with Brouwer's contract is term. What does it line up with? Off the top of my head, Frolik and Brodie. Brodie will be due a bigger payday, so you need that flexibility. Bennett's ELC is also up soon, but it lines up with the expiry of Wideman, Engelland, Bouma, Stajan. Bennett will fit.
In a vacuum Brouwer is probably paid too much. But the term and the money imo fits with the team's plans moving forward.

Didn't want to wade through 30 pages so forgive me if its been asked before but does his having a NTC as opposed to a NMC allow us to expose him in next years expansion draft?

Personally I like it. For a July 1 signing the contract is decent, and as much as we want young players, you can't ice a team of exclusively under 25's. Need some vet leadership outside of just Gio.

Fascinating. Rare to see such divergent opinions like this.

It doesn't have NMC. Limited no trade after 2 years.
They will protect him

Yeah you can expose NTC players, only players who waive their NMC can be exposed for expansion draft.

Yes, they could expose him, but I doubt they do.
Up front I think they likely protect
Brouwer
Frolik
Backlund
Monahan
Bennett
Gaudreau
Ferland? Chaisson if he has a good year and the extend him?
But maybe they want to protect Jyrkipakka so leave 3 more forwards open? Doubtful, but maybe. Exposing Bennett, Gaudreau or Monahan isn't going happen at all. Do you leave open Ferland, Frolik and Brouwer? Who knows. I think they likely go with 7 forwards though

At this point I think it's safe to assume the Flames will protect 7-3-1
1. Gaudreau
2. Monahan
3. Bennett
4. Brouwer
5. Backlund
6. Frolik
7. ???? (Ferland or Bouma or another acquisition? Could be Chiasson if he has a great year)
1. Giordano
2. Brodie
3. Hamilton
1. ???? (Elliot extension?)

As importantly as getting to protect one, they do have to expose 1 goaltender. I don't know the criteria for goaltenders?
Regarding Brouwer, even our 'friend' Lambert didn't mind it:
Of the 104 transactions yesterday, including signings, he rated Johnson as 6th best, Brouwer as 16th best.

Jokipakka will not be protected, because the Flames need a D to expose that meets the 40/70 rule. I'll be shocked if he isn't signed to an extension this offseason.

Good point. Doesn't Engelland meet that rule too though?

I knew this was a good signing and my initial "a little too high" was off when all my non-Flame fan friends who are usually the first to talk trash were complimenting the Flames on the signing. Literally no one said a single a bad thing about the signing and then visited some other forums and most comments were also positive. The first few pages in this thread made it seem like we just signed Yakupov to that contract.

What a brutal signing. Brouwer is a career 30pt player. He signed for 1.5 million less than Backes, Eriksson, Lucic, and Okoposo. I would much rather pump another 1.5 million into an actual top 6 winger.
And then to give a NTC too? Trevy had such a good track record until this. The stupid obsession to be "truculent" and "heavy" is ridiculous.

I'm convinced a lot of people don't actually know who Troy Brouwer is. This isn't some fourth liner cashing in on his time with a good team that inflated his stats. He's a very consistent player, and played on the 2nd line of a very good Blues team.
By the reactions, you'd think we signed Matt Martin to this deal

Career 30 point player that always puts up more than 30 points
Stupid obsession with "truculent" and "heavy" when that's not even Brouwers game.
Then says he'd rather have Backes or Lucic.

For such a price you expect a player who makes guys around him better, or drives the play for his line. Brouwer is not that player. Frolik and Backlund are that kind of player. We paid a premium because of his size, reputation for being hard-nosed and because he had a good playoffs. It may not be a horrible signing, and he may yet be very useful for us, but in my opinion it sets a bad precedent. Still, looking around the league right now it could have been much worse... so, so much worse.

Career 30 point player?
His point totals in his last 7 seasons:
39, 43, 43, 33 in the lockout season (a 58 point pace over a full season), 33, 36, 40.
267 points over 532 games, which makes him a 41 point player over 7 years.
Brouwer is 36th in goals over the past 4 years (tied with Hall).

Yesterday, I freaking hated this signing. But now that I've slept on it, I've grown to not mind it.
I loved Glencross when he was here, and Brouwer seems to fit in the same mold. I am excited to see him play in October.

Really don't get the Glencross comparisons I've seen here a few times.
They are not the same style player at all.
