Democracy is only good when actual democracy is going on. You have to have more than just an election to have democracy. Other tenants like freedom of speech, religion, etc... have to be upheld as well to have a democracy.

When a fundamentalist religious party is in control, democracy, by definition, cannot exist.

So it really comes down to a question of how much power these fundamentalist organizations actually have. If they have too much power and influence then democracy will cease to exist.

The key is a strong constitution that can't be modified without a vote by the people. If you have a strong constitution and a separate judiciary than they can only wield so much power. In the case of Egypt a strong military should be an effective counter-balance to whoever is elected in the civilian government.

You'd need a constitution that directly challenges many elements of Sharia law. Also a government and judiciary willing to enforce and cooperate with the constitution. It's pretty easy for a corrupt parliament or military to undermine a constitution.

I thought this was rather amusing.

Apparently, an American college kid took his vacation in Libya .....with rebel fighters.

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middl...s-for-vacation

Hopefully he doesn't get hurt.....and good thing he isn't black.

Why is he here?
“This is one of the few real revolutions,” he said. “I just thought I’d come check it out.”

“I just go and see what happens,” he said. “At spring break I told my friends a 'sick' vacation would be to come here and fight with the rebels.”

I guess his parents have no idea he is in Libya ...lol.

Similar to the hikers that got picked up by Iran. Not a good place to be at the moment. Thankfully the guys he is with are looking after him.

Not really similar to the hikers, they got messed up in their map reading ended up someplace that they didn't want to be, got charged and convicted of being spies.

This idiot went looking for a fight, intentionally went to Libya.

Yeah but they went to Iraq when it was still a hot zone to go hiking. I think there are definitely some similarities.

That guy is an idiot. You have real people fighting for their freedom and losing their lives and those of their family members, and he's there on 'vacation'.

Apparently China was going to sell Gadhafi arms in violation of the UN embargo in July. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle2152875/

As was Russia before the war, which is why you see anti-west "news reports" on State funded RT.

They're going to have a press conference once they confirm it, likely with pictures/video.

There's a photo from associated press that looks a lot like a dead Gadhafi.
