Trading Skinner almost certainly frees up a considerable amount of cap space. If it’s Mangiapane, the Sabres net $21.2M in cap space over the next three years. Now, they’ll have to replace that player for the last two years with someone, Mangiapane if the resign him. That said if Mangiapane resigns I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s nowhere close to the $9M/season owed to Skinner. He would have up have a pretty solid bounce back season to match what he’s getting now.
Factor in Buffalo’s needs to get into the playoffs, the added cap flexibility, and the available market for teams that could take Skinner on, I think they’re dealing with a limited pool. Also consider that 11OA pick doesn’t help them this year or next or, likely, the year after.
