Saw the Super Mario Bros movie yesterday, I really liked it! Thought it was really fun. Considering now much they could have veered off course with this particular movie, it held together relatively well in terms of storyline. Loved all the Easter eggs in the movie; so many subtle Nintendo references in the story, the backgrounds and really all over. Punch-Out characters, F-Zero posters, one of the karts with number 64 on it, the Smash Bros level between Mario and Donkey Kong, the ringing cellphone in the beginning with the Gamecube loading music... f'ing great.

Some really well placed humor amid solid performances amongst all the cast, and an okay script. LOTS of 80's nostalgia, especially the soundtrack.
I'll be honest, it's not an exceptional movie, but it's pretty entertaining overall. Worth the watch. Even my wife, who is NOT a sports fan in any way, liked it quite a bit. 7.5/10.

Yeah, I saw Air as well. Damn Jason Bateman is funny...I know he's the same guy in everything, but it sure is entertaining.
I think your 7.5 is on the money.
I hope this becomes the new trend that finally gives us movies with stories again (just saw Tetris and now this). Just taking real life things and turning them into movies. It's so nice going to a movie and not being inundated with stupid BS super hero crap, repetitive story lines, annoying CGI and forgettable story arcs with crappy character development.
Breath of fresh air...I really enjoyed it.

Hollywood writers voted today to go on strike May 1st. Hopefully they can get a fair deal, studios have reduced the amount of residuals writers get because most shows are now on streaming and streaming is classified as new media, so I guess the pay structure is way lower than what they were getting from network TV. Streamers have also been removing shows from platforms instead of paying residuals to writers/actors to cut costs.

Watch Charlie Wilson’s War, if you haven’t already
It has some warts, but I really enjoyed the movie and Philip Seymour Hoffman is excellent

Charlie Wilson’s War is one of my all time favourite movies. My best friend and I use Tom Hanks’ “about this much scotch” hand gesture to each other all the time as our “we’re drinking tonight” signal.

I liked Charlie Wilson's War well enough, but it's not the upper tier of Mike Nichols for me.
Another based on a true story directed by Nichols I really like is Silkwood.

Between this thread and the 80s Movie podcasts I've added around 30 films to my watchlist. Gonna be a while until I catch up with the playoffs and summer coming.
Adding Charlie Wilson's War and Silkwood.

I quite liked AntMan and Wasp Quantumania. Wasn't the fun quirky film you'd expect from watching the previous 2 but it was fun and nice and honestly I thought the quantum realm was beautiful. Should be interesting the rest of they way with Kang.

Watched The Last Kingdom - Seven Kings Must Die.
If you like sword battles and 8th century screenplay this film is for you, the AD 937 battle of Brunanburgh is particularly good.
Its a little heavy on the plot, but overall well done.
The movie is the completion of the television series, but outside of some backstory, you get enough in the film to understand.
7.5/10

Anyone else catch "Beau is Afraid" this weekend?
It's almost impossible to review, requires a second viewing but I don't know if anyone could withstand that. It's absolutely enjoyable once you realize it's through the lens of a person with severe anxiety, you feel incredibly sorry for him but it's still funny at times. I can't believe this got made, have to hand it it Ari Aster, quite brave, Darren Aronofsky has nothing on him. Your average John Wick & Fast & Furious fan's heads will explode.

Beau is Afraid is hard to "grade". I can see why reviewers were so conflicted.
The ones who outright dismissed the film are just poor critics though.
It's possible that there isn't a film more psychologically triggering. At least, for those of us with childhood traumas who experienced cold/strict parents. But also people with general anxiety.
It's incredible how Aster managers to expose a person's deepest feelings of vulnerability and discomfort right from the opening minutes, and adds a layer of comedy to that. A frighteningly realistic visualization of a paranoid/anxious mind.
You'll probably hate the experience, but you can't deny that it is riveting. It's more art than entertainment, but entertainment can be found throughout. Ari Aster is a mad man, and I love that A24 lets him flesh out his projects in all their insane glory.

This is top of my list. It looks AMAZING.
I watched Pearl and X over the weekend and both were great. Mia Goth is unreal in both.

Finally saw John Wick 4.
A bit too over the top.

My oldest son said it was way too long. I figured teenage boys would be the demographic that couldn't get enough action.
