So, are we suppose to start a new thread if we have some 'random' topic/question?

What makes a topic/question 'random'?

something that does not fit in threads already existing, yet still 'off topic'.
there might be a lot of topics started without the random thoughts/confessional thread as a place to post. usually, a topic in those threads run for a page (or two) then die down. one large thread seems a bit more organized than lots of 5-10 post threads. there might be an increase in 'off topic fatas'.
just my thoughts, thanks

So start a new topic, we don't charge for them.

More topics being started is hardly a concern and is, in fact, more likely to increase discussion because all the posters that were avoiding chat threads will now see the topic and will be more likely to contribute.

One large thread of 75+ pages or whatever is hardly more organized, it is far more chaotic and difficult to follow.

An increase of 'off topic fatas' isn't an issue if people use the search feature before they start a new thread.

I bet Firefly complained. She seemed really angry the other day and complained about the quality of CP.
I'm both sad and happy to see RTT go. I just don't know if it'll actually help increase quality. I probably will just contribute less. I thought RTT was good for the morale on CP. People could just post whatever. I thought there was some valuable and interesting discussion. Personally I don't find the quality high in a lot of the threads already. 90% of the posts are usually sarcastic anyways. The thanks system has made people really want to get that zinger in there that will be a hit with other posters. RTT could have been used to keep that kind of stuff out of normal threads.
Oh well.

Holy. Never ventured into that thread until now. It was on version 3??haha
I can see why it got shut down.

What exactly is there to get caught up on in a RANDOM thoughts thread? This is what I never understood. If I missed 5 pages I would just skip it and join the one of the dozen conversations going on at that time or just throw out my random thought or idea.
For me it's not about being impatient to click on the second page but sometimes I forget which threads I'm involved in and think anything I'm interested in should be on the first page.
I found with the RTT it would keep the quality threads on the first page and the randomness just goes into the RTT. Then we don't have a thread every 2 days asking if it "is okay to eat expired insert food" thread popping up.

If there really were that many people wanting to talk about eating expired food then there would be one thread on it, not one every two days.

I exaggerate for effect.
And it was just an example. Personally I don't miss coming into the OTF to find a dozen thread asking very simple questions that could be easily googled, instead people seemed to ask them in RTT when it was started.
You guys are the bosses and I am not complaining, I'm just giving my thoughts and option on the situation.

Didn't know where to put it so I'll put it here. I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the RRT. I created just for fun and to throw a bunch of random stuff into a thread. It started with "Is it brown-nosing if I give movie tickets I can't use to my boss" and I didn't want to start a thread for it and be yelled at. I never imagined it would have exploded into hundreds and hundreds of pages of just plain fun. I've read every post in all the RTTs and it's made me laugh alot, sometimes when times were not as great and I was really depressed and down in the dumps. So a BIG thanks to everyone!

Isn't the whole off topic forum sort of a big "random thoughts" catch all? I had no issue with it as it was a catch all and kept things in one spot however I think the point is each discussion can rise and fall on it's merits. It's also perhaps a strain on the server having to load such a large thread?
In any event I don't see the mods saying "no random discussions" they're just saying "start a new thread".
Perhaps there should be a branching of the off topic sub forum? Maybe something like:
News stories
Advice and Questions
Tech Talk
Contests
Random Thoughts

OK guys- the point was already made that we don't want things turning into chat threads, and this is what this one has become. (And it's become a chat about not having chat)

Bingo originally, and then basically whenever a new moderator is needed (due to someone moving on, or just more mods needed), the existing mods just usually come up with some ideas for someone else and it's discussed. Pretty informal, but there's a significant amount of trust since a mod has quite a bit of access, so picking someone who's well known to one or more mods is typical. I've seen the fallout of when mods go rogue and it's not pretty.

I think there was some increasing strain on the server from the large thread as well, so that is a good point.
We do like to wait until it's "well past time" to add subforums, because adding them before usually ends up with a dead subforum, killing the topics rather than letting them flourish. A critical mass of topics seems to be needed before a subforum can survive.
