My heart goes out to the Gaudreau family on what was supposed to be a special day. RIP John and Matthew.

I'm so gutted, and not just because of Johnny the hockey player. I really feel for his family. Seeing how tight knit they were, how proud his parents were every time they watched their son at the Dome. Guy really made us fans feel like we were part of it. And losing BOTH sons...

I just can't imagine how tragic is must be for his parents losing both sons at such an early age, his wife for losing her partner right when they were starting their next journey as parents, their two very young kids who were robbed of their father, and their sister who had the happiest day turn into the most tragic day in her life.

It's just so sad all around.

Derrick Thomas was 33 when he passed away as well.

From what Ryan Leslie was talking - he really really loved it here, and loved the organization.

An absolute tragedy. Those who leaked the information should be held accountable as well. This is like the hockey equivalent to The Day the Music Died

Maybe but I don't think any are as "big".

I was thinking Earnhardt? But he was much older... 50.

So senseless. I'm feeling a little numb at the news.

The Gaudreau family will always be a part of Calgary and the Flames family. I can't imagine what they're going through.

Absolutely stunned by the news this morning, gone but never forgotten.

Agreed whole heartedly with the people saying retire #13 in Calgary.

RIP Johnny Hockey.

Pelle Lindberg was pretty young when he passed, but very different circumstances as Lindberg was an intoxicated operator of a motor vehicle.

Roberto Clemente is probably the biggest name in North America to pass before finishing his playing career that I can think of. But he was 38 when he passed in that plane crash.

I have to think it's pretty uncommon for two cyclists riding together to both be hit by a vehicle and not make it. Just adds to the destruction of this whole series of events. A family that was in the verge of one of the happiest days of their lives now experiencing this. It does make you sick to think about it.

The devastation the whole family is feeling must be overwhelming.

Jose Fernandez would be pretty close.

Only 24, already was a 2 time all star, NL rookie of the year.

Gaudreau will be bigger here but in terms of sports overall that was just as shocking and tragic.

Horrible news to wake to. Condolences to the Gaudreau family, the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets organizations and the hockey world. The family should be celebrating a wedding but now are grieving. Oilers’ fans scare the grief of our Calgary friends.

The description of this murder is so infuriating. I hate when media describe it as “an accident” as if the inanimate object of a vehicle has an autonomous mind. An accident is when you slip and fall, when you’re driving a weapon recklessly, all the worse while intoxicated, it’s murder.

Absolutely terrible tragedy, my heart is broken. I feel for the family today, an absolutely unimaginable loss.

Johnny loved Calgary; he was very vocal about that, and he was so ingrained in our community on and off the ice. An honorary Calgarian no matter where he played or what he did. I absolutely hope the Flames honor him (and they obviously will)... I would be totally okay raising his number to the rafters, he's had that much of an impact here.
