It’s not just game to game, it’s period to period, minute to minute.
The call with 5 mins to go defending a 1 goal lead is different than the standard set at 0-0.

WTF?
Smith faced 52 shots tonight. 56 on Monday.
Only reason we are still (sort of) in this series.
|
I can't see Rittich making many of those saves. Nope. Smith is anticipating the play at a high level the only shots that beat him no goalie stops.

I'm just as mad as anybody they are in this situation. Lets call a spade a spade though, this is not a playoff team and the stars on the squad can't get it done in crunch time.
Like I said previously, some good building blocks on the back end, up front needs a makeover. Build the forward group around speed and maybe sometime during our life time we can experience playoff success.

You quoted me tonight...on something entirely unrelated just to say I toada so

Austin Czarnik and Dillon Dube should come in for Janko and Neal next game. Both guys have been putrid. Give poor Bennett someone to play with that actually looks like they give a #### our there.

Sorry my bad, I misinterpreted that.
I agree with your point even though I don’t think any of those guys would help aside from Duchene, but he’s not signing here
Panarin too I suppose but he’ll be in russia before calgary

That backcheck and this playoffs just underlines to me that he no longer has it to be an NHL calibre player.
Neal is done.

I would have thought the Flames would have played the last 10 minutes of Game 4 differently than the last 10 minutes of Game 2.
But what do I know?

Neal was at fault on the 1st Avs goal too...with a 2-0 lead they should have locked it down

Been alive for 30 years and this franchise has brought me one year of joy and it didn’t even end in a Stanley cup. Legitimately 1 season I consider a success. I feel cursed that I was born in this city it literally just hurts.
I’d take Brouwer over Neal every single day of the week. What an absolutely pathetic performance this guy should be embarrassed to collect a paycheck.
We won’t ever win with monahan and Johnny as our best players they just don’t have what it takes. I’m shattered. Flew out to Colorado to see these games and this is what they bring. Every year we have hopes and this team fails us. I wish there was an answer. I can’t quit this it’s like a terrible addiction

Smith has faced 173 shots Frederik Andersen is next with 145. And Smith is sitting at .931 that should be good enough for at least a tied series.

Random, desperate thoughts...
- Mikael Backlund continues to fail to execute his role at an acceptable level. This playoff series seems “career defining” for Backlund. He’s cut his teeth on the playoffs already. Like mentioned before, this is the biggest challenge of his career and he is failing. Poor night from Backlund, again.
- Mark Jankowski should not be playing centre.
- Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau continue to fail their team. This series is incredibly concerning.
- Mark Giordano is giving 185% effort, but isn’t executing to his level.
- Mike Smith continue to be a player I love cheering for right now.
- Bill Peters is being out-coached by a significant margin.
...I’m trying to find some positivity, but it’s hard right now. I know the team is young, but our young players are being outclassed by a large margin in this series. Generally I’d preach caution, and side on not overreacting, but the way our young players (outside of the young support players - Bennett, Andersson, Mangiapane) are playing right now is crushing to me. I can’t believe how poorly Monahan, Gaudreau, Hanifin, and Tkachuk are playing.
I am entering that “Sean Monahan is not good enough” space. My opinion of Mikael Backlund is also plummeting.
Emotional response, I know - but I’m concerned. Compete level and ability to execute under pressure are absolute musts and this team is absolutely failing right now.

What’s lame is constantly being negative then patting yourself on the back for your amazing analysis. Easy to be right when you are always predicting a loss, because inevitably all but one team loses in the end and you can just move the goal posts.
At the start of the year you can be we are going to miss the playoffs guy, which can morph into we are going to blow the division guy, which can morph into first round fodder guy, which could then morph into can’t beat a true cup contender guy. Always being down on the team comes with the convenient outcome of always getting to be right (for any sports fan) which is something you and many others on here clearly value more than anything else.

I find myself wishing that the rest of the team would find their "Mike Smith Playoff Gear" and get it done.

For the rest of the rational fan base - this was a rough loss. You have two games with a late lead, blow both the leads, then lose both the overtime coinflips.
At worst, even with pessimistic expectations we should have won at least 1 of those games. If you do that 100 times we probably win 90 of them. This small sample absolutely bit us.
We will now very much likely lose the series (maybe at best a 15-20% chance we win) but that's why the games are played. Colorado has been the better team and our superior skill hasn't been able to answer their work ethic.
|
I’d agree with you if the Flames were carrying the play and not being dominated. However when the opponent is outplaying you in every facet of the game except the goalie position, eventually the pucks go in. Especially when there is such a huge possession advantage for the Avs. Flames were lucky to be up in those games. Eventually luck runs out and the top players, in this case the Avs top players, prevail.
