Perhaps not, but revenue and player salaries has been trending upwards pretty sharply for like 30 years.
Until something drastic happens, I'll assume that trend will continue.

Also, he will find solace in his mountain of money after the Flames trounce the Oilers in every game from this point until the end of time.
Edmonton sucks, Connor.

Respectfully, no. No, you do not. If anyone feels it is necessary to say so, then no, it is virtually guaranteed that there are many more Flames fans who hate the Oilers many magnitudes more.

Pittsburgh seems to manage with 2 superstars in Crosby and Malkin, then getting good value out of the rest of the roster. Can Edmonton do similar with McJesus and Draisatl? Should be interesting to watch at least. I've no problem with McJesus, it's just the rest that's up for debate now.
|
No, I don't think that they can because while McDavid draws a fair comparison with Crosby, so does Malkin in terms of his sheer skill and ability to dominate the game. Draisaitl is not remotely as good a player as Malkin and he never will be. There is the biggest difference.

The thing is, the signing bonuses don't really do anything to help a GM with his management of the cap. The money is the same in the end.

Same thing is going to happen with Draisaitl.
Rumored at 8-9 he then signs for 7.5.
Total combined hit of 20M.
Makes Chia and the Oilers looks smarter than they are.
They've handled the PR portion of this better than typical Oilers of the past 10 years.

I guess it is a good deal but that is still a lot of money to tie up into one player. Oilers will have roughly $30mil tied up into 4 players that is going to be tough to manage. I guess the strategy will be to play players with McDavid, let them rack up career points and trade them for a good return. Rinse and repeat year after year to accumulate prospects.
I guess we will see what happens moving forward but I really like what the Flames have done with top players over the past couple of years.

Reggie Dunlop might disagree. Possibly also Michael Backlund.

We could see some interesting dynamics from the NHLPA if there is another lockout. Among the players there will be a world of have and have nots, depending on who has negotiated their contracts with bonuses making up 80% of the comp.

Honestly, the Oilers should consider it a win that they're locking up the best player in hockey for basically all of his 20's. Contract looks heavy now, and it is, but will look progressively better as these 8 years play out.
Seriously, everyone in Edmonton should be thankful they signed him for max term. Term is key to landing washed up vets like Brouwer but to young dynamic players it's a set of handcuffs, McDavid's basically the Gimp in Pulp Fiction locked in the basement of Edmonton.

Coiler fans are excited about the signing, too bad the all failed grade four math! I guess they will figure it out next June when Chiapet is selling off everyone and signing Sergei Ng of the Chinese/Iraq Elite League as thier new line mate for McJesus.

That is exactly what I am thinking.
The PA seems to be building a war chest, but unlike what the NHL did heading into the 2004 CBA expiration it is not a collection of money that can be shared by all the players.

I'm sure there will probably be a percentage cap on how much of a year's salary can be paid as a signing bonus (my guess is 25%).
Really, though, it doesn't make a big difference. When all is said and done, in most seasons, the total amount that the players take home is the same whether it's paid as salary or as bonuses. Either way, it's still subject to escrow, so there's no advantage there.
Outside of a lockout situation, the only time it makes a difference is if a team is considering a buyout because bonus money still gets paid at full value in a buyout. That makes these bonus-heavy deals essentially buyout-proof (which shouldn't be a problem for McDavid's deal anyway).
These bonus-heavy deals will make a lockout in 2020 less appealing to the League and the players will be better able to withstand one (at least those with big signing bonuses that year). Hopefully, that means a lockout will be less likely in three years (or at least shorter if it happens).

Strome RFA
Kassian 1.95
Letestu UFA

Maroon UFA
Cagigula RFA
Pakarina RFA
Kharia RFA
Drasiatl 8 (Guessing
Total forwards 37.90
Defense

Total defenseman 17.84

Cap wise you are correct, but smaller market teams can't afford to be handing out these type of deals with little money coming in before the season starts. I know Flames fans for the most part won't care because the Flames are no longer considered a small market, but if you're a fan of the Jets or some of the lesser USA markets I think you want this fixed in the next CBA.

He'll eat up the McDavid 750 k discount. He wants 9, he'll settle for 8 to 8.5

As good as a deal as Oiler fans could expect. He must not hate playing in Edmonton. Two keys for the Oil going forward:
McDavid's health
Draisaitl's development
It's no cinch that any young team will continue to improve but particularly true for them.

^^ Thanks getbak, yes I pretty much agree. To me this is the only thing that GM's can dangle as a carrot to help sign more cap-friendly deals, and it seems to be relied on heavily this year (see Shattenkirk contract). So basically, all the rich teams will be doing this in lieu of the old front loaded contracts, as it's the only real room to maneuver that they have.

Russell already ate that discount.
Nice job Connor - you took less so Russell could make more.
