Have to say that is a pretty cool mask, love how they blended the red in the top center of the mask behind the old school logo. Dig it.

I'm not the biggest Hiller fan, but he does have very good taste in gear. Loved his retro set last year, too bad the Flames never friggin wear the retros anymore so it can all match.
Speaking of retro and getting away from the plain whites, I always thought DiPietro had a great eye for gear style. That retro brown set he wore a few years ago was outstanding. I was hoping that look would catch on more, but I can't recall seeing anyone else do it at the NHL level.
EDIT: Fleury may have used it briefly too, now that I'm thinking of it..

Just to add to the white gear talk, aside from potentially disorienting a hurried shooter between pads/netting, couldn't another aside also be for "battle scars"? I never wore white pads, but one of the reasons I liked white tape on my goalie stick was to see all those puck marks. Felt like war wounds to me or something, I liked it.
Stealth edit: And especially a white knob (insert joke here), I learnt that the hard way growing up. When you're playing at a level that doesn't have instant replay, sometimes in goal mouth scrambles if a ref briefly sees a small, black object in the net, he may call it a goal WHEN IT WAS TOTALLY THE KNOB OF MY STICK!!! Not that I've experienced that frustration or anything...goalies, don't use black tape for the knob.

isn't there a rule in the nhl about the colour of tape the goalie can put on the knob of the stick? was it last year that one team made a goalie cover the knob of his stick in a different coloured tape..... might have been in a shootout - i can't remember

When I first bought my first set of pads, I was all about the white out pads, but as time went by and watching goalies like Hiller and other fellow goaltenders I realized having a bit of color isn't too bad on the pads.
To me, having a simple design on both your mask and your goalie gear is where its at.
Also, I wonder if Karri Ramo uses the Magic Eraser on his pads every now and than.

This is why it is against the rules to use black tape on a knob. It can confuse refs and Video judges on replay.

Yup, I believe it was either just prior to OT or the shootout. Then, the Oilers played the Flames in their next game and Hartley did the same thing (but during the game not OT).
The NHL requires the knob of a goalie's stick to be white, and white only.
