And regarding the upgrading vs. starting clean argument, I ended up going the easy, non-OCD route and just upgraded because, based on the comments here it seemed like iOS doesn't really require a fresh start like, say, Windows would. As mentioned earlier in the thread, my passwords were not carried over, which is fine, and everything else made it across nicely. A few apps were being a tad flaky (Skype camera didn't work initially, probably because the 3G never had that option, Twitter was a bit glitchy, etc.) but it was the exception and not the norm. And deleting and re-installing solved it painlessly. The new iCloud storage of previously-downloaded apps is nice as you can look at the apps that aren't currently on your phone and reinstall them with ease.

I have a question ever since IOs 5 on my iphone four my battery has gone brutal. I charged it last night and at 10 am I am down to 80 percent. I closed all my apps this morning and only thing I used is texting and streamed slacker radio for an hour on the bus. My phone doesn't seem to make it past 5 when I used to be able to get to bed without needing to charge it Wifi is turned off location is turned on. Should I be going to apple store to swap for a new on?
I have also noticed that once every 2 or 3 days when phone locks when I go to unlock I can't use my touch screen. I can see notifications come in but I can't access the phone. A hard reset fixes this though.
I should also add that when I am in bad reception (my basement) The phone struggles to send messages through Imessage even though I have full WiFi. It seems that the 2 battle each other. I can send regular texts fine and if I turn off my network Imessage works great but when the 2 are on together they battle it out making it painful to receive/send imessages.

go to location services, system services at the bottom, and try turning off time zone service and some of the other system ones. there appears to be a bug where it'll randomly trigger the A-GPS resulting in lower battery life.

I've noticed that when I have a pending location-based reminder that the location services icon remains on all the time. I know it's not using GPS all that time but does anyone know how much of an impact that's got on battery life?

I'm having the same problem with battery life, but I didn't really thnk it was a problem I thought it was normal since I came over from a Blackberry where all I used that phone for was call, text, bbm and email. With the iphone you have many apps, games, etc.
I don't even play the radio for an hour and as of right now it's at 80% and it was fully charged at 8 a.m. I didn't play any games just surfed CP for about 10 minutes.
Is that not normal?

I too noticed that when I had a location-based reminder that my battery life was noticeably lower. I would imagine that, in order to know that you have arrived at your location, that location services would have to be used quite frequently by the phone. If not constantly.
Even if I'm running Skype in the background or streaming radio, the battery drain is much less than my test of using a location-based reminder.

Yeah it's clear that location services are running, it's just not clear which location services are running. Some are nearly free (battery-wise) as long as you're connected to a mobile/wifi network.

I noticed that my battery life appeared shorter when I had a location based reminder as well.

You also might want to try changing your email settings from push, to something less aggressive like an hourly pull. I noticed this made a huge difference in battery life for me

I wish that Apple would let you be more specific with your pull/fetch schedule for email. I don't need it to check at all overnight or during business hours. But it would be nice to have it check email with more frequency during parts of the day when I'm not already tethered to a computer anyway.

I've noticed no difference in battery life on my 4 after iOS 5.
Though I've got a weird issue when reflashing my phone. Once it clears the old OS the computer doesn't recognize the phone and it won't recover until I plug it into a different computer. I've checked that all the services are running in the background but it doesn't make a difference. I've re-installed iTunes a few times and nothing helps.

Well my wife ordered an 4s that I get and she gets this one so maybe I will stop by the apple store and see if there is anything wrong with it. If there is wife will get a brand new refurb phone if there isn't peace of mind that it still is going strong.
Tommorow I will turn off my push email and location notifications and see if it helps at all

This is highly variable for people dependant on a number of factors - definitely for anyone out there that wants to try it, you should experiment using and not using push; don't assume turning push off will be an automatic gain. If you receive mail infrequently, push can actually be more efficient. On the flip side, poorly configured networks, firewalls, carriers, or poor wireless coverage, can make push worse than fetch. There's no blanket answer, unfortunately.
You'd get far greater gains in battery life turning your screen brightness down by a 1/4 from whatever your using currently, though
And for iOS5, absolutely minimize the number of apps that are allowed to notify on the lock screen - it turns the screen on every time a notification fires, which is colossally wasteful (and yet another reason why a very discrete notification LED, done super tastefully like the see-through aluminum and pulsing white light on the Macbook Pro, would be ideal ARE YOU LISTENING APPLE STEVE IS GONE YOU CAN PUT THIS IN NOW)

I've got a doozy going right now. My photos app is f'd. The last 15 photos and videos I've taken appear corrupted. They don't show as thumbnails and when I select them they are pixelated all to hell. Here's the kicker: the phone will NOT display in Image Capture, iPhoto or Aperture. I was able to email the photos off the phone (they email totally fine), but other than that I cannot remove them from the phone. Even manually deleting them works for a period and then they (as if by magic) reappear. May have to give it my first iCloud restore. Fingers crossed....

Interesting. Do you use any 3rd party type photo/camera apps, or just the stock ones?

I use Camera+ and Smugmug wallet and the problem did curiously arise right after I synced my smugmug photos to the phone. Connection?
