FedEx Cup Playoffs

So the top 30 are set for the 10 million dollar shootout in two weeks.

I just looked up the rules and they are as follows. The top 5 seeds will win the FedEx cup if they win the tournament, the others need help.

If this seeds win in Atlanta The following seeds can still pass him in FedExCup points

1-5 seeds None
6th seed 1st seed
7th seed 1st, 2nd seeds
8th seed 1st, 2nd seeds (3rd seed can tie)
9th seed 1st, 2nd, 3rd seeds (4th seed can tie)
10-14 seeds 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th seeds (5th seed can tie)
15-30 seeds 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th seeds (6th seed can tie)

It's incredible to me that Tiger Woods can have the season he had (didn't play early in the year, bad in the middle...his words) and still be #1 ranked in the world. I think they have to look at their ranking system a little bit. His record over the past 15 years should probably be taken into account, but if he has zero wins all season, and Phil can be 5th in money and still not catch him, I think something needs to be altered a little bit. He may be the best golfer over the last 15 years, but he certainly isn't right now. And I'm a Tiger fan.

Talk about parity though; nobody has won more than two tournaments all season long.

This made me think about what the rankings would look like if they turned into a 52-week (1 year) rolling average instead of 104 weeks (2 year). I left point depreciation the same and made the minimum number of tournaments 20 instead of 40 and came out with this as a top-10.

Here's an interesting comparison of Tiger's and Phil's rounds in majors this year.

Up until the final round of the PGA Championship, Tiger was actually better than Phil by 1 stroke.

Thanks for the analysis, that just seems a lot more realistic to what is actually going on right now. Those are the names that are consistently at the top of leaderboards these days. I didn't know how they were calculated though...so right now it's a two year cycle? Hmm, interesting. A lot can happen over the course of a year, or an off-season as we've seen. I like your rankings better.

There's going to be some crazy calculations this weekend but at the moment, Casey has the #1 beside his name.

Jim Furyk saves par out of the bunker to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup as well ont a rainy day. He nearly threw it all away bogeying 16 and 17.

That was a $12 million dollar sand save!
