I just looked up the rules and they are as follows. The top 5 seeds will win the FedEx cup if they win the tournament, the others need help.

It's incredible to me that Tiger Woods can have the season he had (didn't play early in the year, bad in the middle...his words) and still be #1 ranked in the world. I think they have to look at their ranking system a little bit. His record over the past 15 years should probably be taken into account, but if he has zero wins all season, and Phil can be 5th in money and still not catch him, I think something needs to be altered a little bit. He may be the best golfer over the last 15 years, but he certainly isn't right now. And I'm a Tiger fan.
Talk about parity though; nobody has won more than two tournaments all season long.

This made me think about what the rankings would look like if they turned into a 52-week (1 year) rolling average instead of 104 weeks (2 year). I left point depreciation the same and made the minimum number of tournaments 20 instead of 40 and came out with this as a top-10.
1. Lee Westwood - 14.92 (up from #3)
2. Phil Mickelson - 13.04 (remains at #2)
3. Martin Kaymer - 11.39 (up from #6)
4. Steve Stricker - 10.12 (remains at #4)
5. Matt Kuchar - 9.61 (up from #11)
6. Rory McIlroy - 9.44 (up from #7)
7. Jim Furyk - 9.36 (down from #5)
8. Ernie Els - 8.75 (up from #10)
9. Dustin Johnson - 8.69 (up from #24)
10. Graeme McDowell - 8.59 (up from #14)
...
19. Tiger Woods - 6.70 (down from #1)

Here's an interesting comparison of Tiger's and Phil's rounds in majors this year.
Tiger: 68-70-70-69
74-72-66-75
67-73-73-72
71-70-72-73
Phil: 67-71-67-67
75-66-73-73
73-71-70-75
73-69-73-67
Up until the final round of the PGA Championship, Tiger was actually better than Phil by 1 stroke.

Thanks for the analysis, that just seems a lot more realistic to what is actually going on right now. Those are the names that are consistently at the top of leaderboards these days. I didn't know how they were calculated though...so right now it's a two year cycle? Hmm, interesting. A lot can happen over the course of a year, or an off-season as we've seen. I like your rankings better.
Another interesting thing about that: Mickelson 40, Stricker 43, Furyk 40, Els 40. Goes to show that guys can still be extremely elite into their 40s. Tiger still has a ton of time.

crazy leaderboard
of the top 5 guys who could win the FedEx Cup if they win the tournament, 4 have bombed
Casey is the only survivor tied for the lead at -4
Hoffman's at +2
Kuchar, Stricker and D.Johnson are at +3
There's going to be some crazy calculations this weekend but at the moment, Casey has the #1 beside his name.

Jim Furyk saves par out of the bunker to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup as well ont a rainy day. He nearly threw it all away bogeying 16 and 17.
That was a $12 million dollar sand save!

Was glad to see Furyk take it after all of that Pro Am fiasco a few weeks back... And he did it all with a $40 putter.
