Fact of the matter is, and SureLoss, you can google this too, Calgarians have deemed traffic safety one of the most important issues in the city. Like it or not, along with traffic education, check stops, green light cameras and red light cameras, traffic summons are one the main ways to "educate". It earns revenue, in fact a huge amount of revenue, that goes to fund a wide range of things not just the police services themselves.
Getting back to the tint issue, they can't tow your car and get it removed. That is a myth. However, if you continue to drive and the cop decides to do some investigating, and finds this is one of multiple tinted window tickets you have received recently, you can be compelled to court or even arrested. That's right, arrested for tinted windows.
I for one can't stand tined windows. That cop safety issue aside, I can never tell what the hell the driver is looking at when his windows are super dark. Does he see me? Is he talking on his phone? Is he masturbating?

Hahaha maybe, but if you ever see advertising for auto tinting they always mention that it's safer incase of an accident. It could be false advertising so maybe a call to Adam Savage is in order.
Even if that were true, tinting your side windows is pretty inconsiderate, and deserves a ticket.

Do you really want people to answer that question? If they answer in the affirmative, they'll just find a way to explain that what they want doesn't impact those things, making you even angrier.

It was more of a rhetorical question, and yes, I do know the sense of entitlement that some people have will allow them to ignore any valid reason people give them.

Eh, I my two front windows are tinted and should I get stopped for it, no big deal. The manufacturer was only supposed to tint the back windows when I first got my car, but tinted the two front ones by mistake as well.
I've been thinking about getting it removed for the past while now, I just don't know why I haven't yet. I honestly didn't realize the whole safety issue until reading this thread, yet another reason for me to get the tint removed. I've realized the whole cop safety issue, though. I guess I just never worried about getting pulled over for anything really. Not trying to be an , but I don't do anything that a cop would find the need to pull me over. I don't speed, I don't pull any crazy stunts on Deerfoot. It's just something I've never thought about up until now.

Actually, you don't. Your side glass is what's called tempered (When it's made it's heated quickly then cooled off which is designed to make it shatter into a million little pieces and not cut you). Tinting your windows makes it harder to break, which is one of the reasons it is illegal to tint your front drivers and passenger windows.

Ive had 20% tint on my front windows for about 5 years now and I've had 1 ticket. That was probably 3 years ago. You just need to be really careful about pulling up beside cops.
And as previously stated, there is not tint allowed on any of the front windows. ie defer window, passenger window or windshield.
No factory vehicle comes wih front tinted windows that I am aware of. Rear windows are often tinted and this is legal whether it's a factor option or aftermarket.
Shops will install tint on front windows because it is not illegal to install, rather it is illegal to operate a motor vechicle wih tinted windows. Most of the time the tint shop will make you aware it is illegal and ask you if you still want to do it.

Really? The city is full of gangs ripping around in Honda Civics?
What city are you in? I'm in Calgary, and I've never seen tinted out Honda Civics full of gangs ripping around.
The safety issue is a good enough reason for me, but all this "makes it easier for the cops to spot gangsters hiding in back seats" reminds me of Reefer-Madness-style fearmongering. You could outlaw curtains for the same reason.

I love watching cop shows here in the states. Like speeders where the cop pulls someone over for not wearing a seatbelt and guess what cop isn't wearing one either....

Isn't it illegal to tint your real tail lights? I saw this one car at Market Mall with tinted tail lights and one of those gimmicky license plate covers.

Obviously not, since the tinting hides the gang members inside!

All auto glass is made from tempered glass and while the risk of getting cut is a lot lower it can still cut you when you are in a accident and the windows break.
Also, if the reasoning behind tinted windows being illegal because EMS has a tough time breaking the window easily then why isn't it illegal to tint the back windows?
I'd hope they cared as much for the back seat passengers (who are usually kids) as the front.

Actually yes they are.
I went to school with 90 percent of the F.O.B and F.O.B killers and I can say that almost all of them drove a tinted out older model Honda Civic or Prelude. Acura Integras were pretty popular with them too.

Tinting does strenghten the window, but a person who is trying to break it will not have any problem breaking it.

So you are saying if you got into an accident you would rather have an sheet of shattered glass pieces held together with a plastic film flying into your face rather than a few tiny pieces of glass, most of which would land harmlessly on your floor, clothing and seats?
If anything, I would think the bigger sheet would be more dangerous, but thats just me.
As for tinting if you say it is just as safe as having tinting or no tinting you are either <removed> or just trying to justify the tint you have.

Okay, but that's a little different than "the city is full of them".
ANYWAY, it's not even illegal to tint the back windows, so the old "the police have to be able to see if you have a gangster hiding in your back seat" excuse is out the, err, window.

Do you even read a thread before you make assumptions and call me a idiot?
That's not what I was saying at all just what the auto tinting professionals claim.
I'm actually against people tinting their windows, but you would have known that if you read the thread.

That was mine- but what I was trying to say was that by pulling people over who have front tint, they have cause to look into the back seat to look for suspected gang members. I was trying to justify the police pulling people over with tint; kinda like if you watch "Cops" and see them pull people over for a busted license plate light.
