Same with me, my university room mate was a mormon, I've never known a better guy, and he was the most awesome designated driver ever.

He would give the shirt off of his back to help you out, and he was the hardest working person I've ever meant.

And in the end, he gave me the book and signed it, but never once did he try to recruit me.

i think with any religion, only a few really push it on others which makes them look bad. mostly they're fine. then there's the group out in bountiful bc, they're crazy.

I read that while it's being built you can tour it, which has always kind of intrigued me. As soon as it opens you have to be mormon, or have "papers" or some thing.

I've always wanted to see where they baptise the dead. That really irks me for some reason.

I grew up knowing a lot of mormons, they're generally very good people. My only beef really is their aggressive anti-gay lobbying that they do. They were largely responsible for getting Proposition 8 passed in California.

As for the temple, even though Calgary's a really secular city, I don't mind seeing these large religious buildings going up. The crazier ones like this add something unique to the city's landscape.

Those don't look like exact replicas at all.
The ones in the picture are pretty much smooth and solid, while the ones at Angkor Wat are done in tiers with statues around the perimiter.

They're shaped similarily I suppose, but that's a long way from exact replicas.

My mormon friends had mentioned this before, I guess these things are pretty fancy schmancy inside. I got curious as to what the interior looks like due to my interest in architecture.

What's up with the cows underneath the baptistry? There's something about temples or castles or buildings built with a purpose and with a bit of decadance that has been lost in modern construction and architecture that gives them more depth and feeling.

Most people, I think, simply don't care what another person's religious affiliation is - UNLESS they start to shove that religion in your face. That's what sets people off.

Also, since missionaries are missionaries in the minds of most people, a Mormon missionary is viewed the same as a Jehovahs Witness. While the latter are mandated to convert you (thus pissing you off by never getting the hint), Mormon missionaries are *supposed* to simply preach their gospel if you want. If you say not interested or that you've already heard the spiel, they are *supposed* to just move on.

Aren't Christians also required to spead the gospel, good news to others. I'm guessing that would be where the missionary thing comes from.

I don't mind Mormons either but it's also debatable as to wether Joseph Smith was a real prophet or not as well as their beliefs on the baptism of the dead.

Yeah, I realize that, and it doesn't change the fact that aside from the general shape, the spires in Edmonton are about as close to being exact replicas as the ones in Angkor Wat, as the Calgary tower is to being an exact replica of the CN Tower.

In 56 years I don't think I've ever had a Mormon missionary come up to my door. Plenty of JW's but never a Mormon. I've even been in the LDS Family History Center here Calgary a few times, doing some family genealogy research. The people working there were extremely helpful but not once did they try to convert me.

If they did perhaps come to my door, they were obviously very polite and when I told them I wasn't interested they must have immediately moved on without trying to push the matter further.... thus making no lasting impression on me at all.

I dunno about that though....could be hearsay.

It also says in there they are supposed to avoid caffeine, they're not banned from drinking it. So I guess technically they could indulge in a few double doubles.

Maybe, but a friend of mines inlaws are mormon and they wont drink coffee
