Yup there is sprinklers in the building. I'm no fire expert but it looks like the fire may have started on the roof as it took the brunt of the damage. Not sure if there was sprinklers in the roof.

^^^ That sucks Man! ...Hope you don't have to stay locked out too long.

Morbid thought, I wonder how many pets were lost in that fire today. Brutal.

Feel bad for the firefighters too, It had to be a hell of a windy day to have a 3 alarm blaze, Probably could have been contained a bit quicker if not for the gusts.

My building is pretty much brand new, not even a year old. I think the other building started taking occupancy in 2008.

MLS lists it as 2008. 6 listings are up for the building/immediate area. Some appear to be top floor.

Firewalls extend above the roof. When I was there it looked like the firewall stopped the fire on the roof.

I'm also a resident of the adjacent East building and yes these are the Canvas @ Millrise condo's (KevinGuy, you came to look at my POS mazda protege last summer). No damage in our building, but half of the 4th floor on the West building is completely destroyed. They've been hosing it steady since noon so you've got to think the units below will have heavy water damage. I have a co-worker who lives on the 4th floor at the south end of the effected building. When I was down there it looked like her place was ok. The fire stopped about 20 feet from her door (probably at the firewall). That building was fully occupied, so I would guess 15-20 family's lost everything and 100's of people will be homeless. Rough situation. I heard there's going to be a meeting at the Shawnessy Community centre tonight (the red barn) for those in the community interested in finding out more or maybe lending a hand if possible. No time confirmed yet.

I guess the adjacent east building opened up for residents last night at 11:30. I was already in bed at my mothers house by then. Was able to get into the building this morning. The parkade was closed off, but I was able to access my unit. It's totally fine, doesn't even smell smoky. Although it did smell like burnt food as the slow cooker was on since yesterday at 6am. But I guess the firefighters did have the power off in both buildings for a while so it wasn't cooking for a complete 24 hours. But compared to other people this is a minor inconvenience I will gladly take over what they have gone through.

There was people at the disaster relief centre with infants. That would certainly take an awful situation and make it worse. Same with the people that lost their pets. I also over heard people talking that were saying that they didn't have insurance. Seriously people if you don't have insurance, get it. Including if you are renting. Not only would you be out of a place to stay, but you would only have the clothes on your back. No reason not to have it.

City says Millrise complex uninhabitable

CALGARY - Residents of the four-storey apartment complex in Millrise hit by fire Thursday got the bad news this morning: they won't be able to move back in.

Tom Sampson, director of city of Calgary disaster services, told a meeting of residents on Friday morning the initial engineering assessment of the complex at 23 Millrise Drive is that the 159 units are not habitable because of fire or water damage.

"The structural integrity of the building has been compromised,” Sampson said.

“The challenge with this building right now is that we believe it is uninhabitable from this point going forward.

“The real question is, there's a lot of water in that building. There are places where there are up to eight inches inside units, and the load on the structure is high.”

I think people on the south and east side of the building would have things they would be able to recover. I wonder how bad the water damage is on those sides of the building as well and how much of the building is salvageable. Obviously I can't see inside the building, but from the outside those two sides look untouched.

But someone could easily break in and steal all of your stuff. And with the basic coverage I believe you get fire to.

Hey Burninator, I heard a resident interviewed on CBC and he mentioned that he'd had to go shut his slowcooker off because it'd been on since yesterday morning - was that you?

Hahaha! Yeah that was me. I got interviewed by a CBC reporter on my way out of the building this morning. I haven't heard the clip, I'll have to find it somehow. I didn't think that would actually make it on the air because I am sure no one cares about my dinner.

CBC always does a longer news update on the hour - I think I heard it either at 11 am or noon (yes, I've already forgotten when it was I heard it, my brain is a sieve these days). So I'd say if you have a chance, listen on the hour.
