Yeah looking forward to it! I admit I know little about this war in general

I agree.

I get the sense Pacific is going to be a lot more "soap opera" than Band of Brothers ever was and might be a lesser depiction as a result.

One of the great moments in Band of Brothers was actually the last moments, with the baseball game, when you find out what happened to all of these guys after the war . . . . . before that, you really only knew them from their experiences to that point. Very effective.

Clint Eastwood's recent depiction of the Japanese side of the Pacific war was fairly amazing but that also included vignettes and maybe that is the effect Hanks is looking for.

Ha..that's funny, cuz it's true.

Every time I watch a good war movie...particularly BoB, I feel like a little pansy in a huge garden of pansies. The last couple of our generations here have had it so soft and pathetic, we have absolutely no clue. I've even mentioned it to Buzzardswife how BoB can make you feel like a big puss. Imagine these guys at 17....18, etc., even younger, actually volunteering to fight and then the crap that they went through. Wow....

Gettin off topic, but hats off to the ones that volunteer today to go to the crapstorms overseas.

I would rank that as of the top 3 war movies of all time. No sensationalism while still exemplifying all the despair, sadness, bravery and brutality of war. I couldn't remember being more sad or affected by a war movie, which I believe should be their purpose.

Platoon might be one of the most depressing movies ever. It's timing, 1986, was still very raw for most Americans. For a new generation today, it might not have the same resonance.

More recently, I found "Taking Chance" with Kevin Bacon to be a very effective, refreshingly impartial but emotionally wrenching film. It doesn't matter what side of the Iraq debate you might be on.

I've already seen one Newsweek reviewer denegrating Pacific as "jingoistic" . . . . but he thought Band of Brothers was jingoistic as well.

I think the importance of war history is being under estimated.

The sacrifices of the past generations is not recognized anymore.

WWII wiped out approx. 75 million people, ignorance is bliss.

I think these movies should be shown and understood in school.

I remember my social studies teacher showing the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan in Grade 9 I think. That had a pretty big effect on me. I hadn't seen the film before, and was probably the starting point for me joining the Army later in life actually.

What specifically should we be doing to "recognize" the sacrifices of past generations that we aren't doing?

What kind of question is that ? You want a specific task to show your recognition?

(edited)

Actually, just by asking, you've proven my point.

We should devote one day every year to honoring our Veterans. Someone call Harper and tell him to get this done.

I thought Band of Brothers was a little dry at the beginning but it started to pick up after that.

Currahee was an amazing episode. It had no combat what so ever and it was an amazing episode.

Can't wait until I can take WW2 history next year in school. I am actually pondering whether to change my studies from entrepreneurial business, to a historian on WW2, it fascinates me that much.

I had actually missed the first episode of BoB, so by the time I did see, i thought it was fascinating to find out where everyone came from. Sometimes the build up is as interesting as the actual battle.

I assume they will start the series with Pearl, it would be nice to mention Hong Kong.... Alot of Canadian men died there, my dad was 18 months old when his father was taken POW and eventually died on that island.
