And as kermitology has said, The Pacific campaign was a little more involved than WWI style trench warfare. Not to mention facing an enemy who would rather kill themselves than accept defeat. There were times when allied forces would land on an island with little to no resistance, but then fight more inland later. And there were instances where a fierce defense was put up by the Japanese. This campaign was no cakewalk for either side, but effectively, by the time nuclear weapons were used, the Us had already severely disabled the Japanese ability in the pacific by basically wiping out their carrier/naval forces.

For me at least, while the private ryan d day scenes were the most gory, I prefered the land battle part of the show. I know there wasnt trench warefare, but I compare to the constant island sieges to the "boring" trench warfare.
The one thing that could be very good, who knows if they will have the guts to show it is the almost suicidal nature of the Japanese durring some of those battles.
For me anyways, I wont be comparing this to BoB as that would be unfair to this show, I will be comparing this to more private ryan/midway.

No, Friends being a horrible chick flick show, especially the last few seasons, ruined Friends. Phoebe has to be arguably the worst character in a popular show ever. Her "jokes" were the worst, talk about trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
So pumped for The Pacific, just got Band of Brothers on DVD for Christmas and cracked through em again, it had been a couple years. Thanks for the update!

Well I'm sure most of those fellers who fought in the pacific theater would like a do-over if they could so that it would make for less "boring" tv.
Weren't the higher ups even thinking about what parts of war people "prefer" when they were planning to fight the Japanese? Jeeez...
Just the basic concept of the War in the Pacific is fascinating. Massive casualties, terrible conditions and many lives lost, for an inanimate piece of mud and rock with some trees on it. The only value each island had was that it was a few miles closer to Japan, and a few miles closer to an island on which to base bombers that could reach Japan.
given that spielberg and hanks are involved - i am expecting it to be must see tv.
i can recall schwimmer being on an episode of entourage - he was much funnier swearing.
in reading this thread it got me thinking about which front would have been the "preferred" front of a typical GI. although I'd think they were both so different that they could not be compared.
I think it is going to be tough to top BoB. While the cinematography looks excellent again, how they shoot the story looks quite different.
I thought the best parts of BoB was that there was very little sensationalism, few cheesy lines and the simplistic way they told the story was effective. There wasn't flashbacks of home and family or anything like that, they just followed E company from their inception to the end of the war focusing entirely on the soldiers themselves with very little on politics, ideals, and the mood of the countries. I thought it was extremely effective.
I have no doubt that this will be excellent, but it looks quite different than BoB> Being based on Ambose's book probably has something to do with that.
I also liked how in a few individual episodes they chose to focus on a single character a little closer, with that character narrating the episode.
I've always felt that the Pacific Theatre was always a bit overlooked in my U.S. History courses. I have paid more attention to the Pacific due to my grandfather being stationed there in the Navy during WWII and myself being in the Marine Corps.
With that said, it looks like I'm picking up HBO for a few months, looking forward to the excessive use of flamethrowers and shotguns!

I thought Schwimmer was fantastic as Sobel. After reading the book and then watching the series I thought he nailed the character as it was described in the book.

I agree. He did nail Sobel from Ambrose's book. It's just kind of hard to disconnect him from his Friends character since he is type cast into that character after being it so long.

Ya I actually forgot about the Blythe episode, It annoyed me as well but I put up with it because I think the taking and defending of Carentan was a vital story to tell.
Its interesting that you didn't like those episodes, I think my favorite was the Lipton one, when they took the town of Foy at the end, and when Spiers took over.

Oh ya tha one's a gooder. I guess I never really thought about the bigger guys episode's being seen as fitting that category too, I just mean when they focus on guys who you usually never see. Like Blythe and the Louisiana doctor. Trying to relate to the unknown soldier.
Spiers is another beauty on that show. Him and Winters were the coolest characters.
