Yeah - don't tip with bottles. They're city workers, not bums.

I plow the roads and sidewalks. Should I get a tip? Should the police/fire/EMS get tips?

You plow things for a living, isn't that enough?

You guys are cracking me up! I truly wanted to leave a tip, but it was cold out and I was not 100%. I scrambled looking for some booze, but had nothing. I figured they may take the empties, so put those out. Instead, I think I may have created a new inside joke for Calgary puck.

- i'd recommend hand delivering coupons/cash, and maybe leaving the beer/wine, etc out of harms way, but easily visible and noticeable that its not garbage
- from September - April you will typically have the same garbageman. They hire seasonal workers in the late spring/early summer, and sometimes these new guys take over routes for those on holiday/vacation.
Like a few people have said, for instances (like home renos/moving out) when you SHOULD otherwise be going to the dump, and you leave it on the curb and the garbageman still takes it, you're being a nice guy by tipping.
We don't have a bag limit in Calgary, and most of these guys are good enough to throw it all away for you if you package it correctly and save you a trip to the dump that will end up costing you
|
You are making at least $18 an hour plus you only have to work until all the route is completed. What is your net hourly pay? Probably more than most I would think .

You can tip garbage men? Like tipping cows? Cool. I have to try that.

LOL!
I have been a garbage man and people for some reason gave me booze and, well, booze I think. It is a strange thing, but as a garbage man I didn't mind it.
I don't know if they figure you are going to take more of their crap or what. LOL.

I've thought about it but no I don't tip garbagemen. People do give them bottles and six packs from what I've been told by garbagemen. Some of those guys do their route in under 4 hours and drive around the rest of the day or park somewhere.
I think garbage collection should be privatized to save the taxpayers some money.

Would it appease you more if they didn't work as hard and ended up taking all 8 hours to do their routes?

My garbage men (2) get $20. each for great service in all kinds of weather. They've never once complained, no matter how many bags or what they weigh.
We are so spoiled in Calgary. Back east in Ontario, where I'm from originally, they have to pay $ 2.00 per bag... and it probably won't be long before we'll have to pay the same out here.

That's exactly what I thought. Just run out there and give a push.

In Chestermere we get 2 bags free and then have to pay per bag.. but for a few bucks per bag, I see that as a VERY cheap way to get rid of extra garbage for those few times when it's necessary (parties, Christmas, birthdays, etc). I'd rather pay a few bucks per bag than haul it all out to the dump.

How does that work exactly? Do you tape loonies or twoonies to the bag?

They have tags you buy and attach to the bag.
Otherwise I'd be much more motivated to take early morning walks.

I was thinking the same thing it would be like Easter every morning except with money, not candy.
