Not that there aren't people here just to stir the pot, but in order to separate those from those who simply want to talk hockey you have to be able to determine the poster's motivation, and that is made completely impossible by the constant attacks by some Flames fans.

I agree with Photon, its almost unbearable for me to be honest. Does not make for an enjoyable read that is for sure. Its too bad because I think they (other teams' fans) have a lot of good points to be made - besides some obvious ones that are just here to be a pain - but they often get drowned out. Extremely frustrating.

One of the big selling points of CP to me is the acceptance of good fans from other markets. I've always contended they bring a different perspective and often have better information on players or the team than we do here. If the environment is completely toxic, the good posters will leave and we'll all miss out. The bad posters or the trolls won't care about the environment, they're just around to cause trouble and rile people up.
I also agree there is a pocket of Flames fans on the site who seem to take great "pride" in pushing around the non Flames fan or labeling them with a single brush. Whether it's the safety in numbers bully mentality or these fans just need to stoke their ego, I think they are the ones who should be looking elsewhere. Some of these posters have been around for years and the act has grown old. Yes, this is a Flames centric forum, but it's not solely about The Flames. I'm wondering if maybe splitting up the Fire and Ice forum so there in a general NHL forum would help make that clear?

How about the easier solution- ignore the trolls.

This solution cannot be overstated enough. I've never seen a group of people baited so easily.

Maybe some of the good Canuck fans; which I agree exist, can lead by example, or even better, point out some of their brethren are being jerks etc. so that us locals don't become insensed when trolled upon.
If someone like Meyer called a BS Nuck post out it calm the sit. down.
Just my two.

Blaster86 has called out his fellow Canuck posters on numerous occasions. There's just not enough to make some kind of peer pressure on the trolls.
Another thought would be to have the desired no-thanks button, but not have the results visible, just accumulated and viewed by the mods to target disruptive posters.. that way someone can respond to a disruptive post without having to continue the disruption.

And that's an interesting thought about splitting up the Flames and an NHL forum, that's true it might make it easier to tell motivations and such.

Or lead to the increase of FATAism due to perceived overlap of topics. However this would probably be temporary.

Yeah it wouldn't be too bad. Might be worth a trial anyway, I just hate having to check yet another forum for new posts.

I'd find some way of leading that one too.

I hate this idea because then it becomes one extra forum I would have to cruise and most likely there will be a ton of fatas, maybe not thread fatas, but inter-thread fatas where we have two groups of people talking about the same thing.
IMO people need to use a good ignore feature. Great example, me! I rarely get in pissing matches anymore (well except with flip ) because the obvious trolls in my eyes get throw on ignore and I never have to see them again, both Flames and Canuck fans. Also it helps when you see a thread going in that direction you can just ignore the whole thread, its beautiful!!

Once you find out who the posters are, ban them, or give them the option of donating $1000 to CP so that they can continue posting.

Look at all the March 2010 registration dates making the Canucks-OOT thread even less readable than it usually is.

Which side are you referring to, Hakan? The trolls or the Flames fans?

I believe this chunk of text is a pretty decent microcosm of what the problem is.
I won't deny that there are "Canuck Trolls" (There are alot that I feel should be removed) but I'd say there are a fair amount of "Flame Trolls" who simply refuse to get past the idea that other teams fans can actually offer a decent opinion and are just looking for decent hockey talk, They instead stick their fingers in their ears and just reply with Troll like statements "All Canuck fans are idiots" Yeah, its a "flames" message board I get it, but I don't know if its benefical to have trolls on a board, even if they are Pro Flames.
Basically all trolls suck, and ideally they just wouldn't post. I think to solve the problem All trolls need to be dealt with regardless of affiliation. Trolling only leads to more trolling. It's a pretty viscious cycle, and can very much turn off those who actually want to contribute to the forums in a positive way.
