Mainly because of the power use, they run a lot hotter (bad in the summer), and the fact that plasma has a tendancy to develop ghosting issues moreso than LCD. I also think that LCDs have closed the gap as far as your requirements above more too.

I have the 720p version of that LG TV. Got it in September.
I was replacing a Dell (Phillips) 37" LCD. The ghosting bugs me- a lot. Not that it stays for long, but when my g/f turns off the karakoe I can see where the words were for a few minutes. I'm just waiting for the day it burns in.
If you watch a lot of Blu Ray movies, 1080p is the better option for sure. If you mostly watch broadcast TV, I can't see 1080p being standard for 2 years at best; more likely 4 years.

To be honest I haven't seen it. However based on how it's reviewed, it looks like a good TV.
Also, having to do it all over again I would get LCD over plasma. Sure my plasma is brighter, but I can watch daytime NFL on my LCD without having to black out the windows too- IMHO the #1 advantage of LCD over Plasma/CRT is how ambiant light doesn't affect it.

The Sharp's got a bad name for vertical banding a couple of years ago. I don't know if they've cleaned up their act or not.
That LG isn't 1080p according to it's specs. It will accept a 1080p signal but it's still a 1366x768 panel. I'd probably go by how far you sit from your TV as to whether you want 1080p or not.
If you want an inexpensive plasma, I'd probably look at the Panasonic TH50PX80 for $1399.

I'm all for the sharp aquos, they have cleaned up the vertical banding issue. I've had the aquos for over a year now and i can say i'll be going back to them for my downstairs tv.

I have a panasonic plasma and samsund lcd. Far prefer the picture of the plasma if sunlight isn't an issue, especially for movies.

Exactly. The companies have done a great marketing job with 1080p and brainwashing people into believing its something they must have in a new TV.
I went out with my Dad last weekend to get him a new TV and all he kept asking me was, "Is that one the 1080 thing?", having no clue whatsoever in what 1080p was and what it meant. They don't have a BluRay player and even if they do get one, they won't be buying or renting BluRays - so 1080p was a complete waste of money for him.
We left Future Shaft with a brand new LG 720p TV that looks amazing in HD and was hundreds of dollars less than the comparable 1080p version.

Okay so I need some help.
I think I will either stay with the panasonic plasma or purchase the Sharp 52 inch for 300 more.
Which would you go with? It is going to be in a relatively bright room, however there is no light spill when the drapes are pulled. It will be used a lot for gaming, as I game on my 360 and my gf uses the Wii quite often. I don't have HDTV, and as noted I don't really care about 1080P or "i" or whatever. Basically I just want a big TV that isn't super heavy, doesn't break or is fragile because i'll have to move it quite a bit.
The only reason I like the sharp aquos is because its in the size and price range i want. It basically settles on if the panasonic plasma is better then the Sharp lcd. I'm concerned about Plasma ghosting, burn in, and how fragile they are, despite the picture likely being better.
Wacha all think? I don't know much about TVs.

If a major concern is weight and portability - you've pretty much written off a 50" plasma.

Go with the plasma. You can't beat it when it comes to color and picture quality. Also when watching sports, plasma is WAY better than LCD.
Also, burn in, with regards to the new plasma tv's, isn't an issue anymore.
Here is a really good article about why to by plasma over lcd...

Burn in hasn't been an issue on plasmas in years.
Anyone telling you differently either owns an LCD or is just horribly ignorant.

Holy freaking hell I'm mad. I went and returned my TV, bought a new different one at best buy (sharp aquos 52 inch), an open box one they gave me $100 bucks off, and PROMISED when i had explicitly asked if the screen had been turned on when it was returned, and was told yes.
i get it home, unpack it and big freaking green line down the screen.
Not to mention they had this tv in stock and wouldn't sell it to me because some guy was coming back tonight and had promised to buy the product service plans and i wasn't.
And the guy was a prick.
ARGH....
so now i have to somehow get a truck again, lug it back to the store, go through returning it .......
any way i can get back at BB?

Yeah, return it and take your business elsewhere.
Other than that, you could talk to the manager and explain your situation and how much this is a pain in the ass for you. Ask them to come pick up Greeny and deliver you a brand new TV.
Or take your salesman out to lunch at an Asian restaurant.

I would insist on a brand new one at the used price for your troubles. Whatever you ask for, be sure to know what you want when you speak to the manager, and be calm but firm.
I would also recommend against ever buying an open box TV. There is no way to know the history- was it a return (damaged), return because of buyer's remorse, or was it one that had been on the floor running for 12 hours per day for 6 months and then boxed?

Maybe look for someone that has a broken down vehicle on the side of the road when you are returning this one, and help them out...because it really seems like you need the good Karma dude.

I'm going to now. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing to bring it home. I definitely liked the broken plasma when it worked better then the broken lcd i have now.
I'm going to get this one.

Ya I am not going to get into the pros and cons if you already know them lol...speaking ONLY from personal experience I have recently sold my 42" LG plasma and got a 52" Samsung LCD. I also have a 32" Toshiba LCD and it has worked like a dream.
I'll be quite honest, I liked the picture on my plasma better than either of my LCD's but that thing gave me a crapload of trouble. First off it blew up after four months while watching a hockey game (large spark that sounded like a firecracker and bye bye picture and sound). So I had it repaired and then after a year or so I had all of these little red dots on screen (mostly only noticeable on a black screen). I also had a clear line about 1.5' wide go from top to bottom as though the tv had lost colour in that area (could only notice it on solid screens as well.)
So I guess that tainted me from plasmas. Could be that I just had a lemon or it could be LG, I don't know. Like I said though...when everything was working the picture was awesome but it just wasn't worth it for me to keep putting up with problems. As I finish this post I guess it didn't really acomplish anything for you but it did give me a time to rant a bit lol. Good luck.
