I'm not that big on the Wii system myself, but it does seem like it has captured the female market better than a lot of previous systems. For example, there are girls in my office who always talk about playing Wii games, my friend's wife is also really into it, and my girlfriend wants one for Christmas.

Video games used to be something guys talked about more often than girls (at least from my experience), but the Wii seems to be evening that out a bit.

I also agree that the real strengths of the system are that it is more "social" than other systems. Not really my thing as I am more of an intravert, but I can see why it is so popular.

I honestly belive the Wii has been a boon to the growth of 'housewife' gamers, but to credit the influx of female gaming to it is erronous.

As a steady PC user, most of us know that The Sims and games like Peggle and Bejeweled were the real catalysts to female gaming. Since the early 00's the amount of female gamers has jumped dramatically in all genres, and is most certainly noticable in the FPS realm. Notably, Team Fortress 2 has an extremely high proportion of female gamers (likely around 10%), and the numbers continue to rise.

The Wii sucks to gamers, the Wii is amazing to everyone else.

Personally I like it, I think it can do alot more, and the lack of great games is frustrating, but it brought a whole new audience into the gaming world.

What is a "gamer"? In the old days a "gamer" played board games or role playing games. Now it seems to mean pressing a button a thousand times per minute to shoot enemies, while not one of the enemies ever shoots you.

I use the term to describe myself since I actually do all of these things, including card games at times (NERD!) and I take everything (design, culture) pretty seriously. As such, I would normally use the term to describe other people who follow things in a serious manner.

Edit: I miss playing D&D

Whatever you do, don't play 4th edition.

It's quite awful.

I just don't understand the glut of terrible games on the Wii. Nintendo needs to bring back the seal of quality. The huge amounts of 3rd party crap in the discount bin is sort of like the videogame crash of 1983. No quality control and 3rd party companies just pump out s*** to cash in.

Also PS3s Fallout was bugged to and is terrible in comparison to the XBox and PC versions. So there goes your credibility if you bought the PS3 version while having access to an XBox.
Talk about not knowing the details...

I bought the PS3 version because the PS3 is not a part of my video game theatre, it is a part of my home theatre (in the family room). I fealt like getting a game to play in that room, because my dad comes over on occasion and likes to watch me play. The basement, where my video game systems are, is not as comfortable for him (a little chilly).

Credibility? Chill man, we are talking about video games.

One thing to mention about the so called 'console wars':

Microsoft did not enter the business to sell games, they entered the market to avoid having Sony selling systems into millions of homes that might make Windows obsolete. They basically chopped up the market, and in the same business model, have slowly brought in PC features into their console.

There is a great book out there on this subject, I forget the name.

Yes, Resident Evil is the one shooter game done well on the Wii and actually being able to SHOOT instead of manipulating a cursor is what makes it so great. Call of Duty was pretty good too, but the control system was a bit glitchy - although though still on a different, better level than joysticks.

I have to say Xbox 360 has the better games, but if they'd port some of these games over I'd probably prefer the Wii version even with the poorer graphics.

It's amazing what people will believe after seeing a few internet rumours. Sure, a couple reviewers say that the PS3 version is bugged, but I haven't run into a single glitch, bug, error, graphical tear, or anything since logging about 25 hours into Fallout 3.

When games come out on either system, 99% of the times I'll buy for PS3. Superior hardware means I don't have to worry about a game freezing, and the controller is better designed for almost all kind of games.

You're right! Because I am pointing something out I must be angry and venting! No way could I possibly be calm and simply pointing out that you tried to act like an authority on all things video gamey by mentioning all your systems and how the Wii was "basically pretty bad" thus making credibility a factor. Since you bought it to let dear ol' dad watch, there is more than one PS3 game out there. Fallout 3 wasn't your only option, so don't make it sound like "Well I wanted my dad to watch and it was this or nothing!"

Congrats, you got lucky. At this point it's more than rumours and a few reviews though.

I do agree about the PS and their controllers, always did love them more than anyone elses (cept the SNES. Loved the SNES)

Nintendo has always been like that.

I remember back in the old Nintendo/Sega Master System days, Nintendo's big advantage at the time was that even though it was an inferior system, it had way more games... even though most of them were crappy games. Quantity over quality seems to be their M.O..

I have to disagree. Nintendo was the company that brought the industry out of the ditch that Atari dug by flooding the market with garbage.

In the n64 days I remember the biggest annoyance was that they didn't release very many games and when they did they were often times several months (or years) later than expected. The saving grace was that those games were the cat's ass.

I can't really say anything about the N64, Gamecube, or Gameboy consoles. I was out of the video game picture at that time, but the original Nintendo system produced hundreds and hundreds of games, of which, there are maybe 30 that most people would play regularly. I can't remember how many times I went to the video store and rented games that were totally awful. I think by the end of the run for that system, they were doing the exact same thing that Atari did...

That is the golden ticket right there. My wife swore that we would never have a gaming system when we got married. A year later she played a Wii at a friends house and insisted that we buy me one the next day.

Thats like saying you're wife wouldn't let you get a Harley but she finally warmed up to the idea of getting a scooter.
