Computer Surplus you are right - they mainly do surplus/end-of lease but they do have a few new parts.
OEM Depot is new stuff, just not as much on hand as MemEx. Stull worth stopping in and asking the guy.
And Computer Rack - I knew I was forgetting someone in that area.

I actually know the owners of both Mem Ex and Computer rack personally. I used to work at Future Shop with both of them way back in the day. The Computer Rack is a real dump and very disorganized. BUT, they will bend over backwards to beat Memex prices. I actually almost got run over by a car crossing Macleod to check Computer Rack once. heh.
The OP stated he wants to play games on his computer and only has around $1000 to spend....that pretty much precludes a Mac.

Okay, alot of people here are really off the mark when it comes to compatibility issues among the hardware (and on recommending Vista...don't even bother ATM).
I'm going to use TigerDirect as my recommended supplier since you are in Ontario, but I do use MemEx here in Calgary (usually, they can be jerks for certain return items and charge too much for Video Cards)
PSU - Ultra X-Finity 600watt - 93.99 - Good little PSU, 600watts leaves lots of upgrade room
Motherboard - ECS nForce 570 SLIT-A - $119.95 - Great mobo, upgradable, good price
RAM - OCZ XTC Dual Channel DDR2 2GB Gold Edition - $199.99 - Excellent RAM, good for entertainment, multitasking AND gaming!
GFX Card - XFX GeForce 7900 GS Extreme 256MB - $219.99 - Fantastic GFX card, very OCable, and will last a long time
HDD- Seagate 320GB 7200RPM SATAII - $109.99 - Very workable HDD
Monitor - Acer AL2216WBD 22" WS 5ms 1000:1 contrast - $299.99 - Good speed (for gaming/video) good contrast, good price for a 22"
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 2.13 GHz - $299.99 - Best CPU series on the market Hands down
Assorted peripherals (Keyboard, mouse, DVI cable for the monitor) - ~$100
TOTAL PRICE - ~$1550 CDN
You can lower the price by sacrificing for a small monitor or a lesser GFX card, but I wouldn't recommend either

As for vista, he mentioned he wants to use the pc as a media center, while still using it for gaming and editing. Home Premium will do all.

I have been using Vista for months now, both at home and at work, and I really like it. The only thing to watch out for is software compatibility.
I would never, ever buy an ECS motherboard. Just my opinion.

So does anyone have any idea when the Intel Price Drop will be? Because I can't seem to choose Pentium D or C2D for Intel... I'm gonna look at some online reviews for both and see how they are.
Also, is there a version of Vista like XP Pro where u can use the product key more than once?

Man so many AMD people jumping ship. Are you not even going to wait until AMD releases their next gen to compete with the Core 2 Duo before giving the throne back to Intel? That said yes the Core 2 Duo is the best on the market now. If you are getting Vista get 2 gb's, trust me on that one. The rest of the stuff is all just based on preference. I have been out the building computers game for awhile is www.pricewatch.com no good anymore? I have always had good experience with the higher rated merchants on there but its been about 5 yrs....

Retails of Vista allow you to use the key again if you change components or computers. It's the oem versions of vista that only allow you to use the key once.

New core2 duo s should come out on April 22 and should have a price drop. I wouldn't consider a Pentium D.
Prices I've read in US money are:
6420-$183
6320-$163
4400-$133
4300-$113
That doesn't mean computer stores won't jack up the price to whatever they can get.
The 6320 and 6420 are an upgrade over the 6300 and 6400 which will still be available.
I see a lot of people recommending the 7900GS video card. I wouldn't buy one unless it has HDCP if you are considering ever using this computer for HD. There are two available by EVGA with code N623 or 625. I've found the N625 for about $250 but I'd buy the 8800GS 320 or wait for the 8600 GTS coming on April 17 so I here. Also the ATI cards should be coming soon.
For the bestest most excellent up to date read on building a HTPC go here.

I didn't recommended Vista, I just said if going with Vista to go with 4GB of RAM. I personally would avoid Vista at this point as well until better driver support and such, but then again if a person can deal with the quirks early on, Vista will be the OS of choice for years to come, so it'll save down the road when Game XYZ requires Vista.
Otherwise not sure what other compatibility issues you are talking about.
Pretty good PS, gives very good power, but lacks the modular power connectors which are nice (though hardly necessary), and it is a bit noisy for my tastes, however I prefer a very quiet system.
Especially if you want to overclock.

The first link I posted has the expected dates: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...e-roundup.html
April 9 for AMD, April 22 for Intel
How do you mean using the key more than once? If you mean using it on a different machine if you sell or radically change your current one, then the retail version allows that, while the OEM version is tied to the hardware (specifically the motherboard, you can change everything else and get away with it, but a new motherboard means you need a new OEM Vista license).
If you mean use the OS on more than one system at the same time, no license does that, though they are now offering reduced pricing for buying multiple ones at the same time.

It'll be interesting to see what AMD brings with the Barcelona core chips, but I'm a bit skeptical that they can even match the Core 2 stuff let alone surpass it. And Intel's next stuff looks even better at this point. Plus with Core 2 a 40% overclock on air is quite common from what I've read, it's hard to pass up that kind of performance for $.
But I hope AMD comes back with something amazing; better for all of us!

Too lazy to read the whole thread so I'll just say if you are from out of province, go NCIX. Probably the best service you'll get online. Shop around in other online stores and if you find a lower price for any component, they'll match it with an easy to use online price matcher. Any problems and they will do everything to remedy it.
I saw someone mention a 400 watt psu. I think that's way too low if you're going to be gaming and doing video intensive activities. You'll want a half decent video card and sound card and they like the power. Get at least a 500w, I'd say even go as far as a 600 so you have all the juice you need.

Let me preface this by saying that Every compter I own/have built in the last 7 years has had an AMD proc.
Right now the Intel Core 2 Duo (C2D) is the best proc. The E6400 or E6600 are right in the sweet spot of performance. And base on what I have read about the upcoming releases (Intel Penrym) AMD is definitely in chase mode, at least until they get their own 45u processors.
I'm not sure what chipsets are working with the C2D. Last I read, some were really picky about memory speeds. Does anyone know where things stand - are NVidia chipsets maturing?

I'm a newbe about computers and not sure about your question but I understand that you should check for compatibility with your motherboard before buying memory.
I found this site for memory and if you phone they should check for you.
computermemorycanada.com
Here's a place you can pick up an e6400 for $268 and an e6600 for $369 .

Actually, I was meaning some of the chipsets have been a bit picky, and certain brands of memory wouldn't work. I was wondering if the tolerances required have lessened off a bit.
