I don't think there are many video cards out there today without fans on them unless he plans to watercool. Propper air flow in the case is a necessity also.

Doh.
I am sure Ottawa has some "real" computer stores. Just stay away from the big box and mom/pop places. I have never shopped at NCIX, but it sounds cool.

No, there are cards that are passively cooled:

I've bought a few things there, usually when Memory Express acts stupid and refuses to carry the product.

Sorry, I must clarify... Currently I'm in Ottawa, but I'll be in Calgary starting at the end of April, so yes MemEx and OEM Depot (should it still exist) will work for me

You should really check around the Ottawa area first. Memex isn't really all that inexpensive anymore.

I would agree, but the PST may kill any deals he finds there.

Hey, are you interested in a Shuttle??? It's the perfect media center and transportable PC. I may be going to Europe soon so I'm selling my Shuttle SN95G5.
Athlon 64 or Opteron running 2.6GHz (I have both CPUs)
1GB DDR
ATI x850 PRO 256MB
This thing is so cool, fits perfectly in a small backpack and runs all the latest game at high resolution still. I bring it over in my bag to my friend's house, we hook it up to his 50" LCD and play Marvel Ultimate Alliance at 1920x1080 HD!

Precisely why I won't build in Ontario... the PST here turns off a lot of deals cuz in Alberta they'd have the same deal without the PST...
and H&L... I am not a big fan on shuttles... sorry.

I really suggest you look around your area anyways. Memex has a virtual monopoly here on parts, and they're VERY slow on moving prices down, especially on CPUs and GPUs.

Forget Memex, move to Calgary and then order from DirectCanada or NCIX (which are incidentally the same company in Vancouver). They won't charge you the PST and I think DirectCanada has free shipping on orders over $300.
Memex is overpriced and slow with a virtual monopoly over Calgary which is too bad. It's funny, across the street at bcom computers, the prices are usually $10-20 cheaper but few people go there. Memex has good service but they charge a premium for it and you get to wait in long lineups for the service counter.

BCom used to cost more than MemEx... cuz I was looking at a vid card couple years ago and I think BCom had it for $10 more and it was the exact same card. Maybe I'll check out BCom too.

It depends on the item and whether or not bcom is having a supersale. But I haven't seen a supersale from them in a long time. But I've done it about 6 times, gone to Memex, got tired of standnig in line, went across the street to bcom, and saved $10 on an item or two that were exactly the same (like vantec enclosure).
I think with CPUs and videocards though, there won't be much price difference unless there is a supersale (in which case, bcom [being a good asian computer store] will be $10-$40 cheaper than memex if you pay by cash). But I haven't seen a supersale in months, they might not have them anymore.
I still say save yourself the trouble, get a Calgary mailing address (so they can't charge you PST) and buy from directcanada.ca which will have those $10-$40 cheaper than Memex prices always and has free shipping to Calgary.
Incidentally, why don't you like Shuttles? I didn't use to like them either but once I got one, it was a world of difference.
edit
Hmm, Bcom has a surprise sale right now, not that much stuff though and only until Apr. 1st:

In the NE there are 3 or 4 places within 2 minutes of Memory Express: BCOM, OEM Depot, Computer Surplus, Computer Trends (and I think there may be another I'm missing)
Just figure out what you want and walk into each place to see what they will do for you. Although go early, the lineups at Memory Express get crazy.

If you are comfortable with it, buy an AMD processor. Great performance and cheaper than Intel. Make sure you get a dual core processor for both the gaming and video editing. The second most important thing for your requirements will be the video card. This is also going to be the most expensive part you buy, so do some research. I am an Nvidia fan personally, but get the best that you can afford. I would suggest something with 512mb of ram for gaming.
ONe thing that a lot of people overlook is the power supply. Computers these days are power hogs (especially video cards) so get something decent. 400 Watts if you can afford it.

I prefer Computer Rack over Memory Express.

The last time I went Memex when they opened, there was a lineup outside waiting for the doors to open!

Those places pretty much suck except for Memex and Bcom. Computer Surplus and OEM depot specialize in old stuff, refurbished, old ex-corporate lease computers, surplus junk parts nobody wants, etc. Memex and Bcom are the only choices for current computer products like one would expect.

They're fools, the monopoly Memex has in Calgary is unfortunate.

@H&L: I do have a Calgary home address. I am only in Ottawa for the 8 months of University.
Bcom Processors seems cheaper and I would definitely check out direct canada too.
