I didn't like the hire but he did hire Trotz, which was a great move. They had a bit of success for a few years.

I think Lou’s days as GM are done.
He runs a very tight and old school ship, shelf life would be an understatement.
Maybe gets hired somewhere as advisor or something but this could be an end of an era in hockey.

No doubt. Suggested by the NHL is no surprise he has been in Bettmans ear his whole career.
A guy who is a big contributor to the dead puck era, and horrible ideas out of the lockout.
No facial hair. What is this crap.

I wasn’t inferring it was because of age. Seemed more like do to potentially being a sociopath.

Is this the last of Lou? Curious how he retires....quietly hanging with family or does a book or some long form interview? I think a lot of us would like to hear wtf he was thinking all these years.

He doesn't seem like the type to bask in the limelight. I think he just goes away.

In his time in the 90's and 2000's that culture he built with New Jersey was pretty effective. Those teams won three Stanley Cups with budgets that were a fair bit lower than what other teams were working with. So I think that deserves a lot of respect. Over the past 10 years those tougher methods don't work unless they evolve a bit, and it doesn't appear that he was willing to move enough there.
Still a hell of a career in hockey for him. Any of us keyboard warriors should be happy to trade places with him.

I'll be honest, I find the current version of the Isles so meh that I was a bit surprised to see that their GM/HC tandem was Lamoriello/Roy. Shame on me, I guess.

Outdated maybe, but its laughable to call a guy with three Stanley cup rings in a period spanning 8 years a bad GM.

Is there not a single hockey guy that is 20 or 30 years younger that couldn't have also done a mediocre job?
Asinine to hire (and keep) such a dinosaur.

Islanders had basically zero playoff success since the 80s but went on back to back conference finals runs when Lou took over GM duties

He was a bad GM in New York and Toronto. Likely why New Jersey had him go away.
He won 3 cups and that is great, but it was during one of the worst periods the NHL as seen and led to a bunch of rule changes.

You may not like him or his "ideas" but the man had his moment in the sun. Which is hell of a lot more than many others ever did.

There has been only 324 general managers in the history of the NHL.
Only 14 GMs have won 3 Stanley cups. Only 8 of those have done so after the 1967 expansion. Only 5 have done so after 1990.
Lou Lamoriello has watched his team win 1229 times. Only one GM has watched his team win more.
The man is a living legend.

To be fair that record has more to do with Trotz than Lou as they haven't won a playoff round since he was let go. Save for hiring Trotz, Lou did a pretty poor job building that team and his tenure only looks like a success because he followed Snow (actually made some astute moves fleecing the Oilers and Flames for Barzal and Dobson) and Milbury. Lamoriello was a really good GM in his prime years but he's well past his expiry date. Well past.

For the dead puck era, Lou was much much better. Holland had unlimited resources and is likely the most overrated GM in history.
Once the rules changed, they both got exposed. Holland for his inability to outspend teams, scouting etc even playing field. Lou for different reasons.
