The problem is when you think you're still up to it, but you're not because your mind has been gradually declining and you never noticed, because what do you know, your mind has been gradually declining.

To me it's a little more nuanced than that though due to the nature of the job. This isn't some old fella who works in the produce department at the grocery store and doesn't want to retire because he likes what he does and it keeps him active & healthy. There's only 32 of these positions in the world.
But I guess in that regard it's no different than any other career if you've been living it your whole life and like you said I guess he still thinks he's up to it (despite having tangible results to show he isn't). But I mean, ultimately it's more on the team owners for keeping these guys relevant for so long.
Anyways, good riddance. Can't believe Anthony Duclair had to shave off those beautiful locks for this.

There's no set age where you get too old for mental work. George Bernard Shaw was still publishing books when he was 95. We all get to be past it eventually, but some very much later than others.

The problem with the Islanders, is that they are full to the brim of veterans. There is almost no room for natural growth. When you're 82, everybody seems like an infant.

Especially when you insist they're to be clean shaven.

True, but I think since being a GM is based around hockey philosophy individuals can get too set in their ways over a long period of time while the environment around them changes and they lose the forest through the trees (regardless of age). I think Lou is a good example of this.

Yeah, look at their ages:
Horvat, Lee, Pageau, Cizikas, Pulock, Pelech, Mayfield, and Varlamov all on the wrong side of 30 (who are under contract next year). Mayfield, Pelech, and Pulock have been declining.
Other than Ritchie, the prospect list is really underwhelming. Bridgeport was terrible this year, and of their top 10 scorers, only one was under 23.

Terrible GM about time he got canned. His ideas have been outdated for a very long time.
Wonder how soon he ends up in the league office.

Does Holland come with a toilet seat? How do you go from one of the worst to one of the most overrated of all time. Would be a terrible move.

This was a long time coming. The Islanders have to be one of the worst situations in the league given their age and prospect base. Also some weird contracts like Engvall and Mayfield both signed to 2029/30.

It's not that his ideas are outdated, so much as his execution sucks. Some of the moves he's made would not have been good moves in 1995, or 1955 for that matter. Bad management is timeless.

Yeah it's not great, tis but a scratch to those Isles fans who lived through the Milbury era though.
