Kerins is a PPG in his first four games. Flames' management is letting him know that isn't good enough and they're flexing their authority to show him what can happen if he doesn't pick his game up.

What, he personally micromanages every aspect of all his operations and overrules trivially small decisions by managers three or four levels below him?

I agree, $8K isn't much against the cap, until a proposed deal is nixed because you are $8K short. And the $8K shouldn't be viewed in isolation, the Flames do this whenever the opportunity arises, so the amount accumulates over time. It's also good business practice when operating within a capped system to always minimize your cap hit and to maintain those good cap-saving habits.

There may also be something to the fact that the Flames have a gap in their schedule and want to keep Kerins rolling.
Don't see how they would ever need the $8K for cap reasons, the Flames have enough cap room to pick up Ohtani for the rest of the year.

His base salary goes from $775K to $80K in the minors. As I understand it, players are paid twice a month for 13 pay periods. So every day Kerins is papered to the AHL, it costs him about $3780. So I am sure the Flames had an important reason for doing this, like needing a temporary roster spot.

Living in Vancouver I’ve witnessed the Canucks routinely reassign players to the AHL only to recall them 2 days later and as far as I know it’s purely for the cap savings as the players don’t physically practice or play with the AHL affiliate. As petty as it seems and disappointing for the players it’s probably just prudent roster/cap management.

The coach is sure rewarding him by demoting him to the 4th line

Playing center instead of the wing which is more important to his continued development at that position. Hopefully he gets some powerplay time as well but I think starting down the middle is the better move than the wing one line higher
