I love Lomberg the person, but saddling Kerins with pylons on the 4th line is not a good way to introduce him to centre at the NHL level. This is an age old gripe with our club. Remember the times we tried Bennett at centre? Or Backlund (who luckily survived several years of this hell to pull through)

Kerins was sent down to the Wranglers for 2 days. He is waiver exempt, so what was the point? Saving a few bucks? Did they need a roster spot?

Edwards counts every last penny, so probably to save a few bucks.

Agreed on the waiver issue it created.

I actually think giving a young guy a couple days to practice and be around the team is an invaluable tool that teams can leverage when they have roster space and cap available.
Helps you learn how to be an NHLer, especially with wonky AHL schedules you don't even necessarily have to miss many games.

What's up with Huberdeau? Is it just a maintenance day?

Do you honestly believe the owner of the team is involved in saving money on Rory Kerins for two days vs the hockey ops maximizing cap space the best they can, whether or not they need it?

Didn't you have an idea in camp the Flames should use the 4th line as a skill line to break in our prospects from the farm?
It won't happen because Huska is set in his ways of running a grit and grind 4th line, but I thought that was a pretty good idea. Never know they could produce some of the missing goals as well.

Yeah that was my idea in camp and that was my concern with the Lomberg signing.
Lomberg is great, and such a good guy to have on the roster, but with him in the lineup every night it almost forces you to go with more of a grinder type of 4th line, compared to a more skilled and young/offensive 4th line.
And you've seen that this year with Lomberg+Rooney+ Duehr/Klapka/etc being the 4th line most of the season.
It's changed a bit since camp for sure, but once Zary is back in the lineup it's going to create some pressure because you could have:
Huberdeau - Kadri - Pospisil
Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
Sharangovich - Zary - Kuzmenko
Pelletier - Kerins - ???
So the question mark could be Lomberg who doesn't really fit on a line with Pelletier and Kerins...or would we rather a younger player with a little more offensive talent (Stromgren, Klapka, Honzek) or even somebody like Hunt in that role.

While I doubt Edwards has anything to do with this, it seems impossible they would ever need the extra $50 in cap space they just saved. That would mean taking on about $40 million in AAV right now?
Does Kerins pay get affected by this? That would be kind of a dick move.

The savings would be less than $8k for the two days, so very unlikely they would do it for that.
Either the number of days that he is with the big club matter, or it's something simple like they wanted him to practice with the Wranglers because the big club got a couple days off, or something innocuous like that.

My gut would actually have been more about roster flexibility...wonder if they were actually considering Ryan on waivers...or maybe something else was cooking.

The Flames have papered players up just for the purpose of giving them a few days of the major league salary.
The purpose of this was to save on the cap, pure and simple. They don't need it now, but it could help them take on a cap dump later in the season in exchange for some nice sweetener(s) or as part of a larger deal.
I agree, $8K isn't much against the cap, until a proposed deal is nixed because you are $8K short. And the $8K shouldn't be viewed in isolation, the Flames do this whenever the opportunity arises, so the amount accumulates over time. It's also good business practice when operating within a capped system to always minimize your cap hit and to maintain those good cap-saving habits.
There may also be something to the fact that the Flames have a gap in their schedule and want to keep Kerins rolling.

The only thing I can think about is roster size. Zary must be coming back sooner rather than later. They had to send Kerins down, waive Duehr, then bring Kerins back up after Duehr clears or is picked up. Kerins is still on the AHL roster.

My reference to $8k was how much they save in paying him a minor league salary for 2 days, which isn't worth worrying about, but pisses the player off, so it makes no sense.
I think it's either practice time, or, as SuperMatt said, maybe they were thinking of a roster move.

I'm also not sure how it would work but there were rumours of a third party being required for salary retention in a trade this weekend.
Flames have the most salary cap in the league, and think they'd need an open roster spot to be able to facilitate taking on the player as a third party in a transaction at the time of the deal for it to work.
