But, what a horrible contract. Just watch how it's going to play out. Why waste money on this position? Top 5 in goals saved above expected is Hellebuyck, Dostal, Gustavsson, Vejmelka, and Cam Talbot. Can anyone predict that?

It seems like a decent deal but you never know, goalies are weird.

But the $9.5 and $10 mil goalies have all come through with SCF appearances.

Oh yeah let’s hang our hats on 1/4 season stats… Vejmelka and Talbot are clearly top 5 goalies in the world.

Ask Colorado how much a good goalie is worth.

is Colorado going to pay a goalie or Rantanen? That's basically the choice, here. Toews and Lehkonen? Manson and Nichushkin +? Girard and Mittelstadt +?

He would have got that money on the market from several teams so can't really say it's a bad contract.

So just let him walk? Someone would have paid that, if the Rangers didn't.
He's the best goalie in the world, and the most consistent. I understand that goalie performance is volatile, but like SuperMatt said - that makes the consistent ones even more valuable.

When Hubderdeau makes 10.5 for 40 to 50 points, a top 10 goalie at 11.5 seems decent.

It's amazing as long as he remains a top ten goalie. Now imagine is Huberdeau found a way to not only stop scoring all together but let in two extra goals a game. That's what happens when you have an awful #1 goalie.
I don't think the NYR had a choice, but this could look awful in four years. Who knows, maybe they'll be rebuilding by then. This could be their ticket to a few years of good play and then a legit tank job.

Their window is open, and they have (arguably) the best goalie in the world.
If it becomes a bad contract in 4 or 6 years, so be it.

Look at his numbers this year. And if you have seen him play he's already showing signs of inconsistency. It's a terrible bet on a position that has seen guys win it all making a million or two.

I have seen him play (always such a goofy statement). And if I am heading into the playoffs, with serious aspirations of going deep and maybe winning it all, I'll take Shesterkin over any other goalie in the league. There are a few other great ones too of course, but he's my first choice. It's the most important position in hockey, and in the playoffs even more so, as the starter usually plays every single minute of the playoffs.
You go into them with your 'million or two' goalie every year, and I'll go in with Shesterkin, and we'll see how our teams do.

The problem is you don't know who the top 5 goalies in the world are. It's random. We were one goal away from Adin Hill and Stuart Skinner being back-to-back Cup champions.
There are no Patrick Roy or Dominik Hasek anymore.

Shesterkin's name still just sounds like a dish you'd order at a Mediterranean restaurant. He should have to take a haircut on his contract for that alone.
"I'll have two orders of Shesterkin please!"

Where are they getting a goaltender worth that? Jersey just paid a first and a damn good player for a 34 year old old one.
If you have one, you lock it the #### up
Except of course Philly who just hates goaltenders

And he's 39th in the league at GSAE/60 at +0.030 between Aleksei Kolosov and Yaniv Perets. What a great use of a first round pick and Bahl.
But hey! He's a proven starter™!

No idea why you would cherry pick that stat. Especially without context of games played.
You know what else is? Among guys that have played 15 games (a starters typical total)...
8th in GAA
13th in Save% (.04 behind 7th overall)
But most importantly his team is 2nd in wins in games he started and tied for the division lead and are 11 points ahead of where they were on this day last year.
Yeah...i think NJ is A-OK with that trade and getting a "proven starter".

I said in another threat that the Devils don't need Markstrom to be a world-beater - just to be better than what they last year.
Kahkonen has played 58 minutes in the NHL this year.
Daws hasn't played any games in the NHL
Schmid has played 33 minutes
Vanecek has a worse Save Percentage this year (probably very inflated by allowing 5 goals on 7 shots the other day, but still).
So far, mission accomplished.
