I really don't think teams will be be fooled into trading anything for Barrie at the deadline. Unless Rasmus is traded, giving a PTO is Barrie serves no purpose besides potentially blocking a prospect an opportunity to prove themselves.

I would be concerned that Barrie would take away PP time from Andersson, who should hopefully retrieve a premium haul. The Flames have lots of picks, so I would prefer quality over quantity for this trade.

More likely, Barrie would be on the second PP unit. Weegar had 20 goals and 52 points and should probably be in that spot. And if Barrie isn't on the PP, then there isn't much of a point.
But I don't doubt that he can still perform on the PP.

There are always teams with injuries on the blue line at the deadline. If one of those teams needs a point man, Barrie is the kind of player they'd look to add. Not a long-term piece by any means, but a serviceable spare tire.

Unless Andersson is traded, which is what I would guess this PTO is insurance against.

I’m all for it if we trade Andersson. Get some good value back for him and then get another trade chip for the trade deadline in Barrie.

I like him as well, and I think the coaches did too.

Actually a day like today this is exactly what I want to be talking about. I use sports to escape real life. So when events like today absolutely crush you it feels like there is limited places to turn to get away. So I am more than happy to think about a relatively insignificant PTO to continue to get away from a really terrible day.

Thank you for posting this.

I think this is a terrible idea. He's garbage at D. He doesn't seem to understand lanes, can't grasp changing targets. I don't want him. And please don't think that a PTO with some shielding is going to garner any draft picks.

The last thing I want going into the playoffs is a dman so bad defensively that he needed a pto just to keep a job. I want a steady eddie. Ie: not Tyson Barrie.

He's good at moving pucks forward. Really good at it, but if the Flames are going to go about doing things right, well, we don't need him. We don't want him. And unless we're trading Anderson, he doesn't have any value at all to us.

Playoffs?! PLAYOFFS!?

We're talking about practice and you're out here talking about playoffs???

Barrie is the perfect tank commander because of the shoddy D. But also a handy mentor for PP work when you have potential star power developing in Parekh and Brzutewicz.

Or he can just be a PTO so Andersson and/or Weegar don't need to get on any planes until mid-October.

I don't see the big deal about bringing in Barrie on a PTO. The Flames will need him for split squad games.

Barrie is likely competing with Bean and Miromanov for a spot, not Weegar or Andersson. Andersson and Weegar are irreplaceable unless the Flames are bringing in a "bigger" gun like the Yotes' Moser for Sergachev exchange.

...and if we're being realistic, Bean is 26 and Miromanov is 27. Neither is considered a young player or a prospect anymore. Brzustewicz is the only offensive dman prospect with a chance of making roster, and even if he's lights out in camp, he'd be better served logging big minutes and anchoring the Wrangler's PP1 unit this season than being thrown to the wolves in the Flames' horrific bottom 4. If Barrie can beat out Miromanov or Bean for their spot on the second or third pairing, who cares?

Barrie on a PTO would be concerning if this is 2025-26 season when Morin and Parekh are also competing for spots on the roster, but it's fine for now.

If your prospects can't outdo a PTO they obviously aren't ready anyway

Barrie went from massively over rated to under rated in a few years IMO...he is a decent player. Better than say Troy Stecher.

TBF I think he meant other teams wouldn't want him for the POs (at the TDL).

You don't want young players learning from Barrie. Maybe a lesson on how not to be a 2 way defenseman.

I do think that strong powerplay quarterbacks are near-essential in the modern NHL. Perhaps moreso than ever before.

Special teams have grown in importance. 2-way five on five play is one thing. But quarterbacking a powerplay is something else.

The Flames were at their best when their had guys like MacInnis and Suter. It's exciting that the Flames have several young offensive defensemen prospects with upside.

If Brzustewicz turns into what Barrie was at his peak, the Flames will rightfully be very happy

It was tongue in cheek. Sometimes text doesn't really convey the intent. Trying to be funny.
