The only difference in this case would have been the Avs paying him more in the AHL then if he was on a 2-way. If it wouldn't affect anything except his take-home pay, why would it be dumb?

It would be dumb to pay him NHL minimum in the AHL. No reason to simply give money away.

Is is not obvious? Why one way when you can offer a two way, flexibility, less money given to player, etc.

He has to go through waivers anyway if they send him down.

He'll be spending most, if not all of it with the Colorado Eagles. That AHL rate is comparable to the Swiss National League.

Phillips' AHL salary is considerably less than the Swiss League. Top guys in the NLA, like Gregory Hoffman, are in the $1M USD AAV ballpark. It's also considerably less than the average for KHL and DEL stars.

Yeah, the $5 million is the total value of his NHL contracts, but since he has been on two-way contracts most of his career, he didn't make nearly that much.
Looking at his history:
- He got a $75,000 signing bonus each year for the three years of his ELC.
- He spent 100% of the first two seasons of his ELC in the AHL, making $67,500 each season.
- He spent all but 1 day of his third season in the AHL, making $70,000. He spent one day in the NHL, making $700,000 pro rated.
- In 2021-22, he spent the entire season in the AHL, making $80,000.
- In 2022-23, he spent most of the season in the AHL, making $140,000. He was on the Flames' roster from December 8 - 24 in 2022, making $750,000.
- Last season, he was on a one-way contract, and made $775,000 for the entire season.
Depending on how his NHL time with the Flames was prorated, he has made about $1.4 million in his career.

This seems to be standard for the Avs. They only have three other non-ELC signings on the AHL roster - all are Dmen and two make $250 and $400K in the A respectively. I think they are expected to mentor the kids and are paid to do so.
They also have few guys listed on the NHL roster on a two way with a $400K minor salary.

“data”. You should inform yourself how NHL/ minor league salaries work before posting such misinformation.

Hope he comes back and plays out his career on the Wranglers, selfishly. Great AHL player.

I totally missed when he played for Pittsburgh. Had to look that one up. Did he play with Malkin?

He played 3 games and a total of 34 minutes of ice time, and scored no points. I'm guessing he didn't play with Malkin, except maybe during line changes.
Then the Penguins sent him down to Hershey, where he was a scratch by the end of the playoffs.

Are these salaries available for public consumption somewhere? The guy might have dozens of reasons to want to live in CO, but giving up $700K a year over such a short earning window is a lot of money.
I would have loved that option when I was 26.

There doesn't seem to be anything official in English, unless other folks on here know of resources.
There used to be an article here with Hoffman's Lugano salary in CHF, but the link is now broken. It might still be searchable if you know German.
For KHL, I only have anecdotal information from my cousin, who played a couple seasons there after college until recently. If the unofficial information is to be believed, Radulov is making $1.4M USD, Kuznetsov is making $2M, and an above-average (not an all-star) AHLer is making $0.5-1M USD

Bear in mind, too, that the KHL does not have guaranteed contracts. They can cut a player whenever they choose.
