I thought he would have went and signed in Europe somewhere. I will be surprised if he ever really sticks in the NHL. However, for teams that have room in the AHL, he is a great add to help develop players.

Colorado suddenly doing the Florida model: Acquire as many former Flames as possible.

Thought the avs were over cap and over roster when they signed Kyllington?

Won't really matter, as Phillips will likely be sent down to the AHL when the season starts and if he's not, someone else will be.

Why though?
Neither player was good enough to stick around. If they find success elsewhere good for them. It's not like Calgary will be in contention anytime soon.

Good for him. He was a good Flame while with the organization.

Fans going to fan and overate players and prospects. The Flames have lost a top six guy in Philips and three top pairing dman in Kylington, Valimaki, and Zadorov now. Next up is losing a 1st line winger in Kuzmenko.

He'll be spending most, if not all of it with the Colorado Eagles. That AHL rate is comparable to the Swiss National League.

Contract seems fair. He's being paid close to league minimum for his NHL time, which may be nothing or minimal. He's a high end AHL player.

At the very least, they are both guaranteed to score against the Flames at some point next season.

Well it turned out to be pretty much exact contract I expected and not a one way so yeah I stand by my comment would have been dumb if it was a one way.

The only difference would have been the amount he got paid in the minors. It would have been buried against the cap in the minors even at full NHL level salary.

You still haven't explained why a one-way would be dumb.

The reason he didn't get one. He was terrible last season in all games not against the Flames and spent most of the year as a healthy scratch.
It would have been dumb and it turned out to be a 2 way deal. Avs must have thought the same and considering it's August nobody else was offering him a one way deal. Because it would have been dumb.

But why would it have been dumb? As stated, sometimes teams give out one-ways to guys who they fully expect to play for their AHL team, to reward them for being a good AHL player and give them a higher salary in the minors. If it's below the cap threshold, then it makes no difference as long the player is in the AHL. The only difference in this case would have been the Avs paying him more in the AHL then if he was on a 2-way. If it wouldn't affect anything except his take-home pay, why would it be dumb?

"The only difference " is easy for you to to say when you're not the one writing the cheques.
It was obviously a big enough difference for the Avs to sign him to a 2 way deal.
