"Flames getting a new scoreboard".
DP:
- yeah but XYZ has bigger one
- false advertising, make the old one smaller so the new one looks way bigger
Can you just enjoy the fact they are getting a larger one for the OLD rink and will probably get one of the really big ones when the new rink is done.

I wonder if these capital expenses are a because the Flames don't expect to pay up to the salary cap the next few seasons.

Who knows, maybe when it's time to move they'll sell this one on facebook marketplace. Keep your eyes out if you're in the market for a lightly used jumbotron around that time.

Maybe the Flames organization thinks this might be part of the cap space for the next few years until both the rebuild and new arena is completed.

Insurance. I guess we know how the Flames and the City finally closed that budgeting gap.

If you are in marketing, you probably know that this was actually done because someone wanted it to be “more dramatic” or “flashier” and misleading people about the size never actually crossed anyone’s mind. The only real point of reference, which is the circle top, stays the same size, and they have all the numbers. Who do you think they are trying to mislead and for what purpose?
If you are in marketing, and your first assumption was that this was done to mislead people… I don’t know man, maybe you’re doing the wrong kind of marketing lol.

You're totally right about "jazzing it up," and that was my point - that it was necessary. Like I said, these things stick out to me and was just pointing it out because it's an obvious tactic to make things seem more impactful than they may be in their own. I don't think there's anything nefarious here, and certainly didn't suggest so, just little subtleties like this that don't register to most people - but are more "felt" - are interesting to me and maybe to others who work in design or animation, if that's not you then totally cool!
While I may shave some issues with the Flames marketing and PR, this doesn't qualify as one of them
Don't get me wrong, a bigger scoreboard is cool, but I think the Flames could invest much more into other areas of their in-game experience that could maybe be more impactful.

Had this same sentiment reading through the thread. Maybe this is just human nature for some middle-aged people or something, but having a bigger primary screen surface or whatever leaves me totally unmoved. The only part about the new current jumbotron that makes me happy is when I see a rendering of the old-style "8 bit" cowboy shouting Yahoo! after a goal.
In a world where retro can be cool, I'd honestly have no problem if the OG still hung from the rafters. Objectively my opinion is kind of rediculous and of course technology moves on, younger fans have no nostalgia for the '80s like I do, etc. etc. but yeah the jumbotron is not part of the fan experience I have any issue with.

We’ll just have to hope everything is magically fixed with the new arena.
Because yeah, woof, I don’t know if the in-game experience feels any better (or even different) than it did 15 years ago.

Right? I've been lucky to go to a lot of games in the past few years and they really haven't done much to switch things up or make it more interesting, beyond the usual carousel of sponsors with different gimmicky segments throughout. Even my gf, who is not a fan at all, remarked on how stale the experience is (outside of the hockey which she really enjoyed!).
But I'm very much with you, I'm really hoping they revamp everything for the new arena - and I don't see how they don't - because things are pretty stale right now, especially if you compare to, say, a Raptors game or even another NHL team like Nashville or Vegas. The Dome atmosphere has not been very electric for a long time (outside of playoffs) and it just feels like there's no sense of urgency to modernize it or update it. Who knows, maybe the bigger screen is the first domino, but I doubt it.

They replaced those a few years back with bigger/better brighter screens.
Which is good, because the first few rows of the bleeds could see the old screen. This one looks like it will be too high up, so the bleeds will no longer be able to see the whole replay screen at all.

The new scoreboard will be the same weight if not lighter than the existing Jumbotron.
