If Markstrom picks up from where he left off last season, and if there is even a modicum of improvement in scoring, then the Flames will make the playoffs. With as bad as Markstrom was, they missed by only two points.

The reason I am really optimistic heading into this season is because of just how unexpectedly, inexplicably disastrous last year was. I find it nearly impossible that the Flames will be anywhere near as bad this season, which is why they should finish pretty comfortably in a Division playoff spot.

It's not just Markstrom that was bad, Huberdeau was just as bad. I can't imagine he will be that bad again. Markstrom should bounce back, but with Wolf and even Vladar we have some insurance there. Huberdeau plays like a star, this team will be very good assuming no big trades.

Toffoli out will be interesting though, but Huberdeau can easily outperform him, we just need someone to outperform what Huberdeau did last year. Shouldn't be hard.

Kids need to out play Lewis and Lucic. Kylington hopefully plays soon, and our d should be better than last year.

After the last few years, as long as it's fun, uptempo, modern hockey... I'm happy.

A lot of the new guys coming in look really fun to watch. A bunch of tenacious players who play with a bit of an edge.

Coronato, Sharangovich, Duehr, Ruzicka, and Zary all fit that bill.

Plus Wolf really brings an infectious energy, which is pretty unusual for a goalie, who are typically either stone faced or ornery.

This is the toughest question. With very little roster turn over this season and losing Toffoli, it would seem that this team should be pretty bad. However, we missed the playoffs by a couple points with trash goaltending. IF the team plays even slightly better than last season AND they get decent goaltending (Wolf delivers, Markstrom rebounds, Vladar takes the next step), the division will be ours.

I'm expecting a good regular season and subsequent missed rebuild opportunity if hanifin and others walk to Ufa. C'est la vie.

The Flames are consistent at being inconsistent - they'll be better this year.

Sure...but we all know that without solid goaltending thats going to be a real short trip.

I think Flames probably make the playoffs but it could go either way.
More likely to miss the playoffs than win the division IMO.

In the Flames favour, I think you can safely count out SJ,ANA, CHI, NSH, and ARI before the season begins.

COL,DAL,EDM, and VGK are probably the top four in the West.

So in Central you have MIN,STL,WPG and in Pacific you have LAK, SEA, CGY, and VAN fighting for the last four spots.

I think Minny and LA are most likely to make it out of the remaining teams.

All of STL,WPG, SEA,CGY, and VAN are wildcards to me. They all have decent rosters and could go from missed playoffs to strong season based on how lady luck plays out.

The fact that the Jets and Flames both have key UFAs that they will be tempted to deal at the deadline if they are not a playoff lock by then further complicates things.

I'll take STL and CGY out of the last group, but wouldn't be surprised to see any combination of the last five in vs out.

Right now I see the Flames as a 7-10th place team in the west. I see us as an easy out in the playoffs.

A lot can change, but I don't think that Lindholm will match up well against most top lines in our division. I didn't love his play in any of the playoff series since he got here, especially on the defensive side. I also don't see the chemistry between Lindholm and Huberdeau 5 on 5.

I think our top line ends up being
Huberdeau - Kadri - Sharangovich/Dube/Coronato
2 weeks into the season, and I don't think it's a bad thing.

IMO we still need another offensive play driver to play on the 2nd line before we can become a dangerous team in the playoffs or otherwise. That can be a Dube/Sharangovich/Coronato/Ruzicka but I want to see it first.

The younger guys with a chance in camp is exciting.

As for the year:
  • Huberdeau better - 80+pts
  • Markstrom better - 0.910+
  • Our GF/GA goes negative as we give up more chances - Rookie coach / switch from man to zone coverage
  • Injuries take their toll on the season
  • Team is a seller at the deadline - and we bottom out down the stretch to finish in the bottom 10.

I’ll say 3rd in the division, win in the first round, and then a tough out in the second round. I really think this will be a fun, feel-good season. Can’t wait to get rolling!
