That wasn't the case in this example though.
By getting to 100% cap level you can use all the LTIR you have coming to you. If you don't you lose that amount going forward.
This was to create cap space, not burn it.

Sure ...PTO ...why NOT. If a PTO shows up and looks WAY better than Kadri can we just cancel his contract!!!!
I promise I'll drive him to the airport and buy him a first class ticket the F out of Calgary just to ensure he isn't on this team to destroy it with his cancerous attitude, HUGE cap hit ....dear baby Judas priest how the FATA , why the Fata is this guy on our team. ?
Honestly? If you think he moves the needle for this team seriously I need to hear this.
What a clusterF.....an embarrassing Cluster.....Hey BT ....thanks for the gift that just keeps on giving.

Literally the only thing upsetting about that whole scenario is that Grossman was worse than anticipated (he wasn’t expected to be good, as that would have been harder to justify termination of the contract).
He was signed specifically to maximize cap space.
It had to be an unsigned player, so that the contract could be signed to exactly the right dollar amount. The player had to be an actual player who had played before, and the player had to be under replacement player level at best.
Enter Grossman who got paid $10,000 plus to play two games and then have his contract terminated.

Put better than me ...thanks.
He doesn't belong on Treliving's UFA signing miss list.

I get that he had a disappointing second half but this is an odd level of hate.

I think the Flames may bring in a defenseman on a PTO, given the fluctuating status (pending trades) of the blueline.

I would bring in Mason Shaw, Comtois and Simon Benoît.
All young, could fill a role (Benoit as pure insurance) and could battle for a spot.

Doesn't Shaw have a potentially career-ending injury? I like the player, but I seem to remember this...

Oh yeah, if he was healthy he would be a great PTO. Small, but super mean and gritty with good PK ability.

Avalanche sign Peter Holland to a PTO. Holland last played in the NHL in 2017-18.

C Nate Schnarr gets a PTO with CBJ. He was fairly well regarded in his draft, but hasn't done much. He's 24 yo.

Looking at this list of still unsigned players should be a warning to never overpay for bottom of the roster talent when you can still sign capable 4L and 3D players this late into free agency

Are we really going down the "zero issue" with PTOs road again? Just because BT was obsessed with it, doesn't make it good practice. The new GM has even stated that he thinks it's bad business and it really sends a poor message to players trying to make the team that had great seasons for the Wranglers last year.
How many PTO's came in during Treliving's tenure (there were many) and did anything substantial besides contribute to burying someone younger and more energized with the potential to be far better?

Sigh.
Its been explained.
PTO's block no one unless signed to a contract.
The spots they get during pre-season games cannot be filled by rookies because of the vet quotient.
IF a guy is good enough to earn a deal, then so be it and you can start an argument at that point that they might be blocking someone from playing full time in the NHL....but that simply doesnt happen all that often.
If a younger guy, who would already be under contract, is the better option than the vet....the older guy gets released and away you go.
The NHL is not a development league, its where guys play that are good enough to be there. If young guys need more time, there is an entire other league or 6 that addresses that very thing.

More specifically I think he said he'd bring in two or three PTOs but feels that as veterans they can trick you (not his words) by showing a more polished game in camp but not having the same end of season upside.
You still need them in camp to fill quotas.
But hopefully Conroy is less likely to sign filler (good to sign if upgrades)
