Hard no to injecting Wolf into this situation. When and if they are out of it call him up for a handful to give him NHL experience.
Otherwise keep him clear of the mess and re-evaluate in the offseason.

They're out of it.
(Until they get good goaltending)

What better situation would you like to inject a young goalie into than the 2nd-fewest shots allowed in the league?

It's crazy. And when the game is within 1 goal it's no better.
And because of that the narrative has become "The team is bad".
But really it's not. They have flaws (PP, inconsistent scoring) but they should be a top 10 team.
Instead they are getting some of the leagues worst goaltending, especially in close games.

His closest AHL comparable for a U-22 year old goalie to do what he's done in his first two seasons in the AHL is Matt Murray.
Murray played 31 games in 15-16 with the AHL Penguins with a .931 save percentage.
When Murray was called up for good on March 1st 2016 the Penguins were 15th in the NHL, had a 32-21-8 record, and a .590 winning percentage.
He went 7-1-0 down the stretch., the Penguins as a whole went 16-5-0, and then he played 21 games in the playoffs and went 15-6-0 on the way to a cup win.
As of right now Dustin Wolf has played 37 games this year with a .929 save percentage.
The Flames are 16th in the NHL with a .565 points percentage and a 25-18-11 record.
Just saying...sometimes you need to take a risk to reap a reward. Markstrom and Vladar aren't going to win you a cup this year. And it's clear they aren't going to sell or try to call it quits on the season. Likely aren't firing the coach either. Calling up Wolf might be the only move to provide some sort of spark.
|
I posted this in the first Wolf call up thread...time for a bold move and for the org to take a risk for once.

So we can’t play him next year either? If anybody thinks this roster is going to be drastically different next year are fooling themselves. Doubt Sutter is going anywhere either.

Maybe they’re honestly figuring they may as well tank this season, and the best way to do that is keep playing Markstrom.
The rest of the team is locked in - you can look them in the eye and say “with better goaltending, we’re a better team.”
2nd fewest shots allowed and 16th Goals against is incredibly damning.
Bring Wolf up after the deadline, once you’ve sold a few pieces off.
Give him time at the NHL level, but no pressure to save the season.
The team will be short handed, they’ll lose, but they’ll be better for it once they see they’ve
got a goalie
If Wolf has a good audition, you plan to give him 40 starts next year.

The team isn’t bad enough to tank. They are bad enough to miss last wild card spot. I doubt they could move more than a couple spots down in draft order .

For starters, a team that doesn't look like a bunch of dejected Snoopys shuffling back to the doghouse.
The smoke says this is the wrong fire for the kid to start cooking. If he's not coming to be the saviour but the expectation is to still make noise then there's no need to put pressure on a rookie goaltender. If it's as much of a write off that some people think it is there really is no rush.
Starting fresh in October would be the prudent choice no matter how you look at it.

There is a risk in bringing Wolf up to a team that has been inconsistent this year, and today they did seem to have a few brainfarts leading to great chances against, but at the same time, all it takes is 1-2 saves on those brainfarts by the defense, and Markstrom hasn't done that this year with any level of consistency. I can count a few, but he just never makes a big save. You need that from your starter, because you aren't going to defend perfectly for 60 straight minutes against NHL players.
I think a bold GM that really wants to go for it would trade Vladar for futures right now before the deadline. You aren't going to be able to move Markstrom both for his contract and his play this year, but Vladar can net you something valuable. Get something for a player that can help another team go on a deep run, and then bring up Wolf and let him battle it out with Markstrom for the net. I suspect it wouldn't take long for Wolf to get the bulk of the games. Win/win.

Team doesn’t like bold moves. They’d rather trade their picks, sign FAs and fill their bottom line with over the hill players.

This franchise has many faults.
Under BT not being bold isn't one of them.

What mess? Analytically, the flames are a top-5 team in the league and the results are terrible. This is the best environment for Wolf to come into. You have a great team in front of him and all he needs to do is be average for the team to excel.

Anyone thinking Wolf isn’t being routinely hung out to dry facing unstoppable shots isn’t watching the Wranglers. They are as porous or worse than the Flames. Quality of chances against up here wouldn’t be any better or worse than down there.

At this point, Sutter and the management have to be thinking that Markstrom is a lost cause this season, and Vladar is good in a backup role, but may not be capable of being a reliable starter night in, night out.
So they got nothing to lose in calling up Wolf to try to salvage this season. If he's gonna be as a great as some hope he'll be, this could be his moment if he can help carry the team to the playoffs. If he doesn't perform well enough in a couple starts? That's okay, send him back down and treat this as a learning experience for him. He's still very young and can continue on that development path if he ain't ready yet.
What do the Flames have to lose by giving it a shot?

Wranglers are going to go on a Calder Cup run. Leave him down there and gain some valuable experience in a winning culture. That being said, make a plan to have him in the fold next season.
That also probably means Markstrom/Wolf.
