Sure, but you noticed guys getting chances. You noticed Pavelski for example. Heck, I saw Raffl making more of an impact than Robertson.

Yeah, I didn't even know he was playing the majority of the time. He wasn't a difference make at almost 8 million per season you have to be a difference maker.
That's why I don't think he is a star player; he might turn into one but one good regular season doesn't make you a star.

I thought they would buy some UFA years.
Maybe the player hates the owner and wants out after those comments about paying young kids too much.

They have no money to buy UFA years.

Is it though? As others have mentioned, this is pretty much the same deal with Tkatchuk, other than the extra year because his first year was a partial year. Had that counted, I'm pretty sure this would have been a 3 year deal similar to Tkatchuk. It was structured specifically so Robertson could maximize his RFA status coming out of it with arb rights.
I don't recall anyone saying Tre's contract with Chucky was a great deal for the Flames at the time of signing. I do recall a lot of handwringing here on how we basically walked him to UFA earlier.

And the Stars are arguably not even as well positioned as the Flames were when they made that deal with Tkachuk. Dallas is going to be a bubble team at best for the duration of Robertson's contract.

What a weird conspiracy, you think some other team secretly signed him?

I seem to remember he was injured at the time, as disclosed later.

Tkachuk still had 10 points in 12 games. Besides, that’s not how the market works. In a league where the following guys are making over 9 million, Tkachuk is easily worth that. It’s just the reality of the NHL landscape right now.
Dougie Hamilton
Jeff Skinner
Nicklas Backstrom
Darnell Nurse
Jamie Benn
Brayden Point
Adam Fox
Charlie McAvoy
Tyler Seguin
Seth Jones
Mark Stone
Zach Werenski
Anze Kopitar
Sergei Bobrovsky
Jonathan Toews
John Tavares
Drew Doughty
Erik Karlsson

That's a bit unfair. Defence and goaltending will take you a long way and the Stars are loaded on that front. They also have some solid forwards in Hintz, Gurianov, Robertson, Marchment and Pavelski. Wyatt Johnston might prove to be a steal where he was drafted as well.
With a new system and possibly a resurgence by Seguin who started to really come on once he got healthy later last year along with it, the Stars could definitely be in the 5-6 seed conversation.

Oilers fans be like….
Damn, we were getting Robertson, a top prospect and a non lottery protected 1st rounder for PullyourRV. Dallas only did this contract to screw the oilers.

It wil be interesting t see if this is the start of a new trend with payers to sign shorter term deals in hopes of controlling thier fate sooner and possibly signing a anther deal at a much larger pay.
Imagine if McD had gone to a deal that expired in a year or so. He’d likely be looking at $16m per year given the deals that were signed recently

McDavid got $100 million in guaranteed income, and he didn't have to wait four or five years for the big paydays to start. Anyone telling him to do otherwise would have been giving him bad advice.

He could have got a higher AAV to stay in that dump for one and a shorter deal would have made him more money in the long run too
half way through his deal and he isn't even the highest paid player in the league...a few guys will pass him before the deal is done.
Did I mention he is stuck in Edmonton?

A shorter deal wouldn't have guaranteed him $100 million no matter what happens. For all we know, his career could be over before his current contract is even up.

Nor does he deserve to be. If he ever bothered playing on the other side of the puck, I might feel some sympathy.
