Better to hit the floor by overpaying Klingberg than trading for Lucic.

If we're talking about a team that's looking to compete, sure.
But the Ducks clearly made this move from an asset perspective with his potential trade haul in mind, while also putting themselves over the floor.
Overpay for one year knowing you'll be able to trade him for a decent haul.
Great move on the Ducks part.

Always nice to pick up an extra 1st round pick and maybe a prospect. Good move by the Ducks.

Yup agree that it's a great move by a team like the Ducks with an eye to trade deadline when they'll get a nice return for a top pair dman.
Wasn't certain the signing was done given Weekes' reputation of jumping the gun, but we now have the beat reporter of the Ducks confirming.

This may not be great, but I still think this is better than Nurse's contract.

If I was in the Ducks shoes I would rather be worse this season for that 2023 pick than maybe a late 1st in a year or two
Seems odd on the players side too...just me

Gotta think the Ducks are in one of the most envious positions in the league. Great young talent, loads of draft picks, no boat anchors (maybe Heinrich??), all the cap room in the world and all dead money coming off the books this year. Going to be flipping Klingberg at the deadline for another 1st plus a prospect. On their way to becoming the 2009 Blackhawks.

But an unsigned asset that you can flip for more assets is a spectacular thing to have we just learned.

One year and they will almost certainly flip him at the deadline quite easily (unless he's hurt of course) for assets. Great deal.
Nurse's horrible contract just kicked in. He's getting paid more than Makar. Klingberg's contract is miles better.

Wow, why would Klingberg agree to a 1 year deal with a bottom-feeding team? I'm sure other teams have offered deals with way more term, for a bit less. He must really think he will have a monster season.

It would be interesting to know. If he wasn't getting close to what he wanted he probably knows for sure he's getting traded by the Ducks at some point......he can play a ton of PP time, all situations, rack up some points and then get traded to a playoff team at the deadline, perhaps setting himself up for a nice extension with his new team. My guess, anyways.

If they have already thrown in the towel on competing why not give themselves the highest possible pick?
Supposedly the best draft class in years...don't see many bottom feedings adding actual good NHLers

Yeah, I can see that. But he can also get season ending injury and his value would be lower than now. That's what I don't understand the one year contract.

Seems very risky to map it out that way, so many things could cause his production to decrease or have an off season. Very odd to see a UFA accept a 1 year term unless they are right at the tail end of their career.

I wonder if the Flames made an offer for Klingberg and he declined at the advice of his agent thinking they could get the Flames to offer more, then the Flames traded for Weegar and took their Klingberg offer off the table because clearly he's not needed anymore.
Then the agent firing.

That and I think he wanted to be back in Dallas.
They overplayed their hand. Seems to happen to one or two UFAs every year.

Didn't Klingberg request a trade out of Dallas at least once?
