I guess thats more my thought process. Be way more gross if they had the camera laying around. It isnt like people just carried those around everywhere.

Which is basically the entire culture of hockey from the pros to the minors. The Old Boys Club has basically been unchanged for decades.

Based on conversations I've had with guys who played college level basketball, hockey, and baseball it's pretty common. I agree with you, in that I just don't get the desire to do it. They did things like that fairly regularly based on how frequently guys on these teams would tell me about it.

It's bad enough knowing that one of these guys would sink so low as to rape an unconscious woman like that...but the fact that there were SIX of them with a camera rolling like it's perfectly acceptable? Who had this footage? Like, who has been sitting on this all these years? ####ing appalling.

He doesn't give a ####, which I love. Friedman and the other shills employed by Rogers likely have had plenty of knowledge of this type of behavior, and chose to stand on the sidelines.

The story says it was an actual video camera. They had a physical tape.

In 2002/03 there were rudimentary video cameras on some phones capable of taking only small blurry clips. Nothing that you could film something like this on.

Nothing seems to say that an actual video still exists, and the three "witnesses" who never came forward are nearly as guilty as any of the players involved. Something like this could very well have gone under the Hockey Canada radar, equally Hockey Canada could've simply ignored it as addressing it it would be too difficult for them.

One has to wonder if other World Junior teams have also done similar things... now that this is the second team to be implicated.

To those wondering why sick stuff like this is allowed to happen, it's the same sort of macho culture that's allowed for hazing to be so pervasive in university sport teams and frat clubs. Junior players, who are young, immature and of course easily impressionable, could easily get sucked into doing something this as some sort of badge of honour / rite of passage.

Not even remotely close. They should feel guilty about not saying anything, but that's a pretty big ####ing world apart from being guilty of gang raping an unresponsive woman.

Insane take.

I wonder if allegations will come out involving players from other countries’ teams? It can’t just be Canadian players, can it?

Edit: I see littlereddevil made a similar point.

Yeah, from just having played high school and college sports I am not surprised at any of this. Competitive team sports cultures are fertile ground for testosterone-driven domination behaviors, whether it's humiliating people through hazing or it's stories/acts of sexual conquests. Lots of pretty nasty behavior is condoned, fostered, or turned a blind eye to in competitive sports. I'm not aware of anyone who I played with ever doing something like what's described here, but it wouldn't shock me to find out a couple of guys who I'd been on teams with over the years had done this kind of stuff. It's a context where you find a decent number of guys whose whole sense of self worth comes from physical exploits that show their dominance over others, and no shortage of them are pretty dumb and emotionally stunted.

Back when Game of Thrones was still well-written, Robb Stark dropped this gem.

Don't for a minute think that this is a Canadian problem.. it's a hockey problem and generally a male problem, but the alpha male culture of hockey is a big contributor.

These guilty players (whomever they may be) - I imagine that the majority of them now have their own families - wives and children. This is going to really hurt a lot of other people unfortunately as well, and I feel bad for all them.

Don't feel bad at all for the people involved. Hope each and every single one of them get identified and get whatever is coming to them.

Good. Old Boys club for too long in that industry, protecting each other and probably being enabled along the way.

Never understood as a kid why these guys were treated like gods. Glad to see retribution for the victims might be at hand.
