You know you can insure against injury easily ? I’m not actually sure what you are arguing

That JG would not risk 12 million for injury to get more from Flames but is willing to take the exact same risk to go to UFA? That he hates the Flames so much he is willing to risk 80 million to get away ?

Maybe you need to give your head a shake when you realize the risk of an injury is the exact same whether he goes to UFA or signs with Flames after the season.

He bet on himself before the season that he could have a bounce back year.

Once he made that bet it would actually be pretty stupid to not see it through the playoffs to maximize his value (the Flames also may want to see the playoffs - if they loose in the round 1 again they may not want to commit 90 million to a small player who can’t lead the team in the playoffs )

Honestly - it makes perfect sense for both sides to see how he performs on the playoffs . Doesn’t mean he is going to sign - but him signing now make zero sense for JG unless Flames threw 100 million at him

Players wait until after the season to re-sign all the time. Gaudreau not re-signing yet is nothing new.

No player in the history of sports has ever gone to UFA unless their team didn’t want to resign them - give your head a shake 😏

Your logic and thought-process is so broken its hard to believe someone actually thinks like this, unless they're just trolling.

I honestly can't even make out what your argument for him going to UFA is. Because he wouldn't risk a career-ending injury, even though he did exactly that by not signing a cheaper deal last offseason?

100% trolling and they're quite bad at it too.

I'm not trolling at all. I think if Gaudreau wanted to sign with a different team in the off-season, he would play his cards the exact way he's done.

1) Have a great season and maximize value heading into free agency.
2) Whenever asked, remind fans that he's never said he won't re-sign in Calgary
3) Sign with a US team, tell fans in Calgary that they'll always be special to him but this was a necessary move for family reasons
4) Profit

1) Have a great season and maximize value before signing an 8-year extension with Calgary.
2) Reiterate his intent to stay in Calgary.
3) Sign with Calgary because his entire family loves the organization, city, coach, direction of the team and teammates.
4) Profit more than he would as a UFA by signing an 8-year contract.

That was easy.

There are so many moving parts, I don't think you can predict it at this point. How the Flames perform in the playoffs will likely make a difference. What Tkachuk decides to do may make a difference. How other teams do in the playoffs will likely impact who is selling/buying/making major changes/etc in the off season. What other teams decide to do will impact who has cap space. I expect Gaudreau will explore all his options, and ultimately It's tough to determine at this point how all the cards will all fall that ultimately determine what options will be available to him.

They really shouldn't sign him. He's a small guy and by all best guesses is going to cost a lot. They could get 3-5 players for the same price as him. Strength in numbers! Especially if those 3-5 players are bigger!

Will the Flames sign Gaudreau??

Well, they're going to try.

It's ultimately up to Johnny though.

Remember when everyone thought that Landeskog was leaving Colorado because he didn't sign until Free Agency period opened? We're going to see a lot of that now. Isn't there a negotiation window immediately before Free Agency opens? We'll see players use that window to ensure they're getting fair market value from the team they want to stay with.

He's already been re-signed, they're just keeping it under wraps so they can celebrate his new contract when he gets his day with the Stanley Cup.

You heard it here first.

Why would any athlete risk upwards of one hundred million bucks on the chance he could play really well and up his value by an additional 5%, while being at constant risk of having his career ended at any moment?

I get that fans want to cheer for their team, and it isn't nice to hear people speculate that a top players wants to leave, but we need to be realistic. He should have been given a fair offer earlier in the season and dealt at the deadline if he didn't agree to sign. The Flames have been really bad with managing their assests for decades and that's a big reason that we haven't won for over three decades. Sure, we might win the Cup and everyone will be bumping this thread and saying how great it was that we stuck with Gaudreau, but the odds of that are low. I'd say there's an 80% chance that we lose in the first couple of rounds of the playoffs and Gaudreau walks away for nothing.

Saving this one for when Johnny signs with the Flames.

Can't say yes or no until we see what the playoffs mete out.

Gonna be real easy to make decisions with another 1st round exit.

They win a couple rounds and then decisions get made

I think it's pretty clear for everyone involved in the Flames from the fans to the players to the management and owners that unless they can get the job done when it matters, nothing is on the table.

If it's a choice between Gaudreau and Tkatchuk, I'd take Gaudreau. If the choice was between Gaudreau and Tkatchuk or Lindholm, I'd take Lindholm. Gaudreau and Tkatchuk will want too much money. But actually I don't care if both of them walk.
