That could be said for every Canadian player. Johnny said at the start he wants to be here if the Flames want him, he went as far as to say "he has never once said he doesn't want to play for the Flames." He jas been playing hard seems happy and not concerned so unless there is some agreement in place for him to walk he sure hasn't shown it. Didn't his dad say he loved playing for Sutter, MT says they are all really close, what more do we need?

Johnny Gaudreau is not re-signing with the Flames. If he was going to, he would have done so already. All hockey players are one bad hit away from having their careers ended. Gaudreau is likely to get a contract worth somewhere about eighty million dollars this summer. Do you really think he'd be playing all season long at the risk of losing out on all that money if he was just going to re-sign with the Flames anyway? Of course not. He would have taken an earlier offer and avoided the risk.
Of course players aren't going to tell the fans that they're leaving until the day comes. They stand to gain nothing from the abuse. Would you tell a girl you're going to break up with her in three months, or just wait until you're ready to leave and do it then? Flames fans are kidding themselves if they think he wants to stay here.

The biggest knock on JG is his ability to elevate / keep the pace in playoffs
A good playoffs could be worth another 10 million on a long term deal.
Players do bet on themselves

Are you just increasing the ridiculousness of each take? Is the next one about aliens?
Gotta be 80% of players who re-sign do so at the end of the final year of their contract.

Lawless sucks, I remember him talking to Dregar earlier in the season and he said it was, the Knights and Oilers at top of the division and no one else was relevant. How did that work out Gary?

I’m wondering why we haven’t started a thread on this yet. I’m thinking that it might also include MT and it could possibly be a signing watch thread.
Weird. CP usually does that.

I would guess the current Flames best offer is 80-85 for 8 year
With a great playoffs he could look at 11.5 a year so 92 million ?
So it’s not a small bet - prob 10 million difference
On a UFA deal for 7 years I don’t see anyone going over 11.5 right now. So 80 million.
A big playoffs and 12.5 is possible on open market .

The only financial constraints would be the tax situations however I think in the next CBA salary caps should be adjusted based on the teams provincial or state tax rates. A salary cap means nothing when take home pay is not taken into account.

What can you buy with $92 million that you can't buy with $80 million? Give your head a shake. Nobody is going to risk getting a career ending injury for an entire season to try to make an extra few bucks. If he gets a terrible concussion or other bad injury that means he can't continue playing, are the Flames going to give him some money for free? No, of course not. This is a business. Other teams can only offer him a seven year deal, so even if he wins the Conn Smythe and brings the Cup to Calgary, he's not going to greatly increase his market value.
