It's the NHL's own soap opera. Never ending, and quite boring.

LOL.
The border issues certainly make it a mess, but it wouldn't actually be that hard to relocate them from a schedule standpoint...the Coyotes seem to typically be at the start or end of opposition road trips, and rarely on back to backs (for the opponent).
And the league may be going to an alternate schedule if the Olympics are a no go, which would open up even more wiggle room.

That seems absolutely impossible. Pretty interesting for the team to just lie outright like that.

Wow! I just looked at their CapFriendly page for the first time in a while and they only have 6 players on their current roster who are on contract beyond this year.

And a bazillion draft picks. It's ugly, but they're doing it right. Either go for it, or be brutal. They are definitely the latter.

They're doing exactly what armchair GMs on fan message boards think every losing team should do. It very seldom works in real life.

I don't think I've ever seen a team with this many picks over the next few years. And some franchise players up for grabs. I guess we'll see.

I don't think Phoenix was ever given a chance of being a legitimate market as soon as they moved to Glendale.
To enter a market, you need to be able to capture casual fans, including the dreaded corporate disinterested fan.
Can you imagine meeting a sales guy for a game that is in some far flung suburb nowhere near your place of work or home?
They eliminated a ton of potential casual fans by making the arena in a place that is a pain in the ass to get to to for 3/4 of the population.
I go to a lot of Flames games, and grew up a hockey fan. If they played in Seton, that number would drop dramatically because of logistics.

I've had the thought in the back of my head since it was announced that Glendale was giving them the boot next season, could they simply suspend operations until their new arena is open?
They could continue to draft and operate their AHL franchise, and move their handful of NHL contracts that are valid beyond this season (would the league allow for them to temporarily loan those players to other teams in the interim, or trade them for picks/futures?).
Their current arena was built in less than 2 years. Could they build another at such breakneck speed? If they were able to get a deal with Tempe and begin construction before the end of 2022, could they be in the new building by the fall of 2024 -- only losing 2 seasons?

The last time this kind of thing happened was during the Great Depression. There were cases where a franchise was granted permission to miss an entire season, but never after the season had started. On the rare occasions where a team suspended operations in mid-schedule, they were punished with the revocation of their franchise. The Chicago Blackhawks once played half a season in a near-empty arena in Windsor, Ontario, to avoid that outcome.
Of course, I don't know what the current franchise agreement between the NHL and its member clubs looks like (nor, probably, does anyone else other than Bettman, Daly, their lawyers, and the owners). But I imagine there would be many millions of dollars in forfeits to be paid, and the Coyotes' franchise might revert to the league.

Oh yeah, I wasn't suggesting mid-season. I think they'll work something out to complete this season. I was thinking more about next season, where they don't have a viable local option for a home arena.
It's either make a deal with Glendale, which appears unlikely; play in the run-down old Memorial Arena which would likely cost many millions to make into an acceptable temporary venue; play in another alternate local venue like the football or baseball stadium (I don't think the basketball arena can accommodate a rink anymore); temporarily relocate to another city while the new building is being built; or permanently relocate to a new city.

Same thing for the Panthers, one of the leagues best teams barely draw 13k in fans with no covid restrictions and half of them miss the first period because their on the road traveling to the edge of the Everglades, meanwhile in Tampa every seat has a butt in it.

I’m aware, but I just wasn’t aware it was that extreme this season. It’s like a new level of trying to suck. The players probably talk like prisoners: “Where do you wanna go after you get out of here?” I understand the strategy but going to that extreme is also that much more horrible for fans and the franchise.
